The Griz Were Good Tonight

The Griz were good. There is no denying it.

Yes, they gave up a 32-10 lead in the first half.

But they were in control and kept doing their thing and playing well the whole game.

Every one of the 8 who played, played well.

Weber had talent and is good. But, at least tonight, Weber was not in the same ballpark.

Weber didn't double Akoh, but all 3 of the guys who guarded him got 4 fouls. And then couldn't guard him.

I like the Griz team.

I thought they looked great, too.

Oguine was the only one not on top of his game.

Akoh is a fucking beast. So fun to watch. On both ends.

Didn’t know Dorsey could move like that; or that Timmy could rebound like that.

Manuel reminds me of the Warrior’s Livingston. Off the bench, tall and slim, great handle, silky-smooth. I think he even has the pencil-thin stache.

It was a game of runs. Seemed like our zone D was suffocating, but, like a race car in the red, we can’t hold it there too long, and have to go back to a man D, which would let the Weebs back in

Forgot to add: it seemed like after Akoh took over, Weber was trying everything and everyone to stop him. Something eventually started to work late in the game. Not exactly sure what that was but maybe they started fronting him more or knocking from the block. The only thing Rahe did not have them do was double, which I thought they should’ve tried. But something began to work so UM put Akoh in pick-n-roll instead of low post. It was kind of working but not nearly as good. If his roll game can get to the level of his low post—holy shit, look out

Travis said Oguine and Falls played hurt.

Akoh was dominant. 25 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assists.

Braxton had 3 rebounds, 4 points, and 4 TO.

Weber ended up shooting a bit better, a bit better from 3, and slightly better from the line.
Weber had 2 more rebounds, but got only 2 offensive bounds.

UM took great care of the ball. Only 6 TO. Rorie didn't have any, in 37 minutes. Weber had 14. Weber had only 6 assists. UM had 13. UM had 7 steals. Weber none. Oguine was only 2-5 from the line. Pridgett was 6-8. No else missed more than 1.

UM played a lot of very good defense. I liked the effort. Not too many big mistakes.

Both teams played only 8 guys, and really only 7. Dorsey had only 6 minutes.

UM was 1-7 from 3 in second half. Rorie had a period where he scored 3 mid range shots fairly quickly. UM had a 32-10 lead with 5 or so to go in half, and then got outscored 10-0 in the next 4 or so minutes. During 2 of the 3 bigger runs UM gave to Weber, Travis had 2 subs waiting to get in the game for much of the run.

Attendance was 5547. Pretty good crowd and into the game most of the time. Good student section. It was a very fun game and atmosphere. Pres Bodnar and Chelsea were at the game. The Sky Club was hopping before the game. Schillinger was there.

One of the refs sucked. The others were fine or even good.

 100% with you, PlayerRep! And for the record: Coach DeCuire said post-game that Michael Oguine played with significant stiffness and muscle pain because of his fall at Idaho... and that Timmy Falls was not at 100% because of his knee tweak Thursday. If this team gets & stays healthy, it'll show on the court.

Between Akoh, Fall, Oguine, and even Dorsey this has been the mantra so far of the 2018/19 Griz. I honestly believe we win one or two more non-conference games with a healthy Akoh, and agree this team can only stand to improve as team health improves.

Griz played well last night. They are talented and well coached. Excellent defense, great body language.

Dorsey is very intriguing. He seems to be getting stronger and more confident every time he gets on the floor. If he ever gets to full health, having another tall, athletic gaurd that can shoot the 3 and drive to the hoop would be a huge asset for this offense.

I'd add in Morehead's defense. After Coach Napolean blew like dynamite to the refs on the sideline (Griz had no fouls, Weber 5), they called two quick touch fouls on Morehead at the 32-10 mark. He came out, Weber's offense got going and ran off 10 straight.

While UM gave up runs of 9, 10 and 11 to Weber (I think), those were not collapses by the Griz. They were nice runs by a good Weber team that was trying to fight back into the game.

UM was in control the whole game. At no point was I concerned that the Griz were collapsing or would lose. They just kept playing hard and answering all Weber runs.

The Griz didn't shoot as well the second half, as they did in the first. 1-7 from 3 in the second half hurt the Griz. Some missed free throws later in the game hurt the Griz too. Even Manuel (86% in conference) and Rorie missed free throws at the end of the game.

Good defense, good rebounding, great taking care of the ball, 7 steals, and Akoh being his beast self took care of Weber. Akoh is now 2d in rebounding and 5th in scoring in the conference. 2 others in the top 5 in rebounding are 6th and 11th in scoring.

I think it was 0-7 at one point. Then a couple minutes later it was 4-7.

It looked to me like they were trying to get Dorsey down on the low block at times and at the elbow in the high post. I think this is a great place for em. He is very athletic and rangie could be a nightmare matchup with Akoh in the game. I think he had a few nice passes when they were running those flex cuts through the middle of the key. He really played good D on Saturday as well.
