The GRIZ and BSC basketball

Here is what I posted at bigskyfans.com regarding the GRIZ. How do others feel the conference will play out. I would love to see alot of "BASKETBALL" only posts here. This forum is way to dead for me. Thank you all.

This year will definitely be dog fight and to date I have not a clue how it will play out.

I have a feeling PSU, Montana, WSU, NAU will likely be the top 4. I will not be surprised one bit if MSU somehow becomes a threat by seasons end. Huse is one hell of a coach, and his team WILL only get better each week. MSU better enjoy Huse while they can. I will not be surprised in 5 years he will have made a huge impression and be pursued to move up. Talent and depth alone the GRIZ should be the favorite, but they have some issues that have yet to be proven they can correct. (1) How can they compensate for no true SF? They will have to man that position dependent on matchups each game. (2) Shot selection has been inconsistent at best. They have the best frontcourt in the confenrence, yet at times refuse to pound the ball inside. All this despite the coaches' desire and wish to get the ball inside. (3) Allocating minutes and massaging egos. IMHO the GRIZ are a much better team with True Freshman, Brian Qvale on the court. Defensively he is difference maker and gets 17 minutes a game. His play is deserving of 30 minutes. He could be 12 to 13 point, 7 rebound, 2.5 block per game average guy with 25 to 30 minutes. He is the shotblocker we need and a well above average rebounder.

Another player I am high on and feel would make a positive impact is, Zach Graves (FR Redshirt). He is by far the most athletic GRIZ, penetrator, quick, solid ball handler, and true shutdown guard. How do they distribute minutes to him though? Matt Martin is shooting consistent, leading the GRIZ in steals, and assists. Cam Rundles is injured, yet when healthy and ALL BSC caliber player. Ryan Staudacher is a good shooter, solid defender, and good at getting the ball into the posts. He is averaging 30 minutes per game. I feel he and Martin should be averaging 20 minutes per game. Try working more minutes in for Qvale, Graves mostly and some to Vanderjagt (another agile 7', that can only help rebounding and defense).

(4) Fear of change defensively. Graves, Rundles, and Ceylon Elgin Taylor are all quick athletic guards. Graves an Elgin-Taylor particularly have what it takes to be true shutdown guards. I feel the GRIZ need to press ball handlers quite often with either or both on the court. They need to force some turnovers for a few easier buckets. Most of the time Defense is too passive. Defense is much better with Qvale and Graves seeing minutes.

(5) FT shooting consistency. What a roller coaster this is for the GRIZ, one game they hit better than 80%, the next 50% to 60%.

(6) All the above lead to this, 40 minutes of solid hard play! Like last year, so far this year they turn the switch on and off as they feel is needed. They, the players need to have that switch "ON" for 40 minutes. That and shot selection alone will make the GRIZ the best in the BSC. Problem is the players have yet to prove they are capable of doing those things 40 minutes a night every game.

As for the freetrhow shooting, if the opposing teams just foul the right players all the time, the FT % would be more consistent. But, just so happens there some players that just plain suck at freethrow shooting and when they are the ones getting fouled, UM's percentage is going to go down. Just have to hope that Matt Martin gets foulded all of the time. He is the best and most consistent freethrow shooter. Hasquet isn't bad, being a 71.9% fT shooter. Staudacher has a good ft% but he doesn't shoot very often (just 2 - 2 - not enough to really know how good he is). Strait has shot well from Freethow line for 3 games in a row. His percentage is 64% which is the best he's shot since coming to Montana. His career percentage is still below 60%. Then there is Rundles who is shooting 77%. Spurgetis is 3 - 4 (75%).
All the rest of the other players, need to keep from getting fouled and being put on the line.

I think Portland state and Montana will dual for the Big sky championship. Ken Bone is great coach.

regrading the "going Big line up". it might be interesting for Fans to
hear Tinks Press conference comments on Montanagrizzlies.com Someone asked him about a big line up ..moving Jordo to the 3. He had some concerns basically Jordo is all conference 4..but not sure about an all conf 3. And..he was concerned that Stauds minutes be cut back.He said something like.. Stauds not only being a great shooter BUT the Griz BEST shut down defender. Tinks stating stauds shut down the opposing teams best scorer to only 6 points last game. Those are things that do not show up on stats. I saw stauds shut down Weaver and Weaver is one of the best in Pac 10 and NBA material big time ! The Griz hanging with WSU the first half
was the best part of the season.. so far...well of course it would of been amazing to play two halves in that game... but they have more learning to do.

No sure about big Dave But QVALE..I LOVE what I see ! I also have to remember we do not see practice and if Graves and Vandrjet are not seeing time their must be a reason.

I am glad to hear Stauds is a good defender too. From what I have seen of GRAVES he has the tools to be a shutdown guy too. I really would like to see Stauds be freed up more for open shots. Would having Graves guarding the best wing and staudacher being freed up for open shots work for a few rotations a game? Maybe Stauds is using too much energy defensively to be a consistent offensive contributor. Anyone that has seen Staudacher shoot has to admit he has a very nice shot. With consistent touches I see no reason why he could not be a tops marksman from 3. Hard to take many minutes from Martin, he is playing consistent so far this year. Is Cams injury playing a bigger part of this than we think? Any ideas of how to work Qvale into the mix for minutes? Would a 3 man PF/C minute rotation work, and occasionly swing Jordan to the 3 to go big now and then? Swing Stauds to the 2 on offense, with Graves, CET, Martin, or Rundles at the 1. If we are getting beat on the boards get Sharp in there against the more physical teams.

It is nice to have a team to even consider these options. Past years we have not been this deep. Talent wise it is hard to say we have any scrubs this year. Time and recognition wise Spurgettis, I love his attitude, he plays hard, an average shooter, tough d, I cannot label him a scrub. Most any other BSC roster he may be in 8 to 10 man rotation. Anyone with updates on Vanderjagts health/ injury. I think that is making it hard for the coaches to find him minutes to get him much needed experience. :thumb:

I like Qvale alot too. However, if Qvale gets more minutes, then it generally has to come at the expense of Hasquett or Strait (and sometimes Sharp). In many situations, Hasquett isn't quick/mobile/whatever enough to play the 3. I think Staudacher gets alot of minutes, because he's the closest one to a 3 we have. Too bad we don't have McGillis, as he is a 3. Also, I think Taylor could play the 3 fine too.

Martin deserves his playing time. He has been one of top and most consistent players this year.

At the very least it sounds like we are in agreement regarding Qvale. I think it is very possible to create the minutes for him w/out robbing any 1 or 2 people minutes. Even by free up 2 minutes each from the current starters that alone is 10 minutes. That gets him to 25 to 30 most of would like to see him out there for.

9 months until football season.

Yes, I know you have to wait 9 months until that thugball (Football) you like to watch comes. Poor loser. You might as well have a baby.

But, until then, we are going to watch the best sport (basketball) on the planet.

Leave it to Swilly to not get Griz-Cat smack.

BTW, thanks for the update, CWR. There goes MSU's chance at winning the Brawl this year. Too bad.

Don't forget about WSU, UNC, & NAU...the last team that dominated the 'Sky was the '04 EWU Eagles. I don't think we will see a season like that this year...I'm thinking it will b similar to last season but I think the team to host will need more than 11 wins.

I can say without being a homer that we can finish in the top 3 in the conference. We've played well the past few weeks (with the exception to the last meeting with DU) without our two best players in Taibi and Archibeque. Both should be back by conference play. We had a nice win against Colorado State and Bowling Green with out those two.
