The gauntlet ahead

Definition of gauntlet

1a: a double file of men facing each other and armed with clubs or other weapons with which to strike at an individual who is made to run between them —used with run

b: a line, series, or assemblage
especially : one that poses some sort of ordeal

Talked about this on the podcast but wanted to break it down in a post. The Griz are flying high and looking damn good. The 2nd half of this season poses to be the real test to this team, where it's at, and where it'll be come the end of the season.

Looking back

Combined records of the teams Montana has played: 15-17 (11-16 if you remove Oregon)
UC Davis remains ranked at 24th
Monmouth the only team they've beat with a winning record at 3-2

Looking ahead

@ Sacramento State (3-2 / receiving votes) - If Sac wins this weekend they'll be in the top 25
vs Eastern Washington (2-4 / receiving votes, I believe)
@ Portland State (3-3) - don't sleep on this team just yet
vs Idaho (2-4)
vs Weber (3-2 / #4 )
@ Montana State (5-1 / #6)

Furthermore, look at the scoring and total statistics for each team's defense and offense:

Sac: 2nd scoring - 4th total offense / 1st scoring - 3rd total defense
EWU: 6th scoring - 3rd total offense / 12th scoring - 10th total defense
PSU: 4th scoring - 5th total offense / 5th scoring - 1st total defense
Idaho: 9th scoring - 8th total offense / 11th scoring - 9th total defense
Weber: 10th scoring - 13th total offense / 2nd scoring - 2nd total defense
MSU: 5th scoring - 6th total offense / 4th scoring - 4th total defense

(UM is 1st scoring - 1st total offense / 3rd scoring - 7th total defense)

Effectively Montana will face the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th best defenses down the road. Davis and ISU are generally 7th/8th, respectively. On the other side of the ball they're matching up against the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th best offenses too.

Are the Griz up to the challenge? I believe so, I have faith in this team, but man oh man - these next 6 games are going to really tell us who this team is.

It is a daunting remainder of a schedule, but all very winnable!

After today, we have three remaining road games: Sac State, Portland State and the Pity Kitties. Of those, Sac State is the one that concerns me most.

We also have three remaining home games: Eastern Washington, Idaho and Weber State. Weber State is the best of those, but the way Weber State played Southern Utah today, I do not think they are as good a team as they have been rated. EWU may be coming on strong.

The gauntlet does not seem as difficult as it did a week ago.

I dont’ know if its any easier, just different. Sac moved up, Weber moved down, PSU & Idaho about the same. ‘Scats moved down. EWU moved up.

I think we are the tightest squeeze of the gauntlets that THEY face.

I agree with this assessment. It’s still a gauntlet, but we gotta beat the best to be the best. Im kind hoping (in a perverse way) that the Cats don’t fall to far in the polls before we can shit stomp them.

I get what you’re saying but this has gone on from the beginning of time and it’s not just the poor griz getting picked on. I can point to the exact same examples on BN where people say the cats are gonna lose and then when we win the teams we played sucked. SEMO sucked. Norfolk St sucked. NAU sucked. Poly sucked and the Cats suck because we needed OT to win.

It’s how it’s always been. I said it was funny that ISU was a “black flag” game. Picked the griz to win big. They did what they should have done. But I was told it was a big game and ISU is actually really good thus great win for griz.

I happen to think Sac looks pretty good. I think they’ll give us all we can handle. But we’re just “hedging” and calling a bad team good in case we lose right? Lol.

This will never change. Teams are good until you beat them. Sac will suck this weekend on egriz but my guess is by next weekend egriz will think they’re very tough.

I believe sac is good regardless of how this weekends game goes. Top 3 big sky team IMO.
Yea but if the Cat defense holds them down and grinds out a win, all of a sudden the egriz narrative will be that Sac State is really suck state, and isn't as good as everyone thought. I mean how could they be?? MSU beat them after all..

Of the 6 games, only 1 remains. Pretty impressive so far.

You were spot on right here. Sac went to top 10 team after beating Griz, it is their signature win, then MT buckled down and showed they are legit contenders.

I blame the alcohol.

This "Gauntlet" may be the story behind the season. The Griz really might have run out of gas.

. . . Biggest key is if injured Grizzlies will be able to play, let alone play at a high level. Was told multiple starters would not have been able to go had the Griz had to play today.

..if that is the case..its time to bring in the back ups and see what we got..but I agree
I think all the ammo was gone at the end of the Weber game.

... The difference now within the playoffs is ALL teams are running the gauntlet. In some way it puts us on an even playing field. I like our opportunity. Winning within the trenches is the new gauntlet.
