Over the years as helmet technology advanced, helmets more and more became weapons. 50 years ago you did not lead with a helmet; it would be you that paid the price.

Looks promising, likely to come at premium cost but if it meets its promise it will make a huge difference in health of a lot of athletes.

Hope this moves forward

Thanks for the link! Very interesting. It looks like the technology will be able to reduce some impacts. But that does not necessarily mean it can eliminate concussions. A concussion can happen by having your brain jostled inside your skull, even if the helmet takes the brunt of the force, the brain can still be moved. But progress is progress, and this technology will take away the weapon that is the current model.

Had to love those old suspension helmets. Went home with ridges in my forehead many a night. So Because of my large-ass head, I had one of the first air/water suspensions when they hit our high school in the early, 70's. (Dark days before the empire, Super Mario, etc.). You didn't lead with those things either because the coaches didn't teach you to lead with your head. We also had the advantage of not having SportsCenter highlights to worry about emulating. Take the face masks off, you'll solve most of the problems seen today.

You are right. You see it with running back running with their head first. It's always defenders getting the bad wrap for tackling, but it goes both ways. It is also a reason tackling fundamentals have gone to crap.

Saying that, I think this technology will be an improvement from the helmets they have right now. You either go back to the leather or you progress to this.

Mike Ditka said it best. "you want to eliminate head injuries in football, take the helmets off."
He has a very valid point.

Yep look at rugby. Not very many concussions in that sport.

We played tackle football with no pads, no helmets on frozen ground and I don't recall any significant injuries -- though we weren't playing with 300 pounders that could run 4.6 40's either. Destroyed the knees of many jeans though and once took an elbow to above the eye that required 8 stitches.

I stand corrected. Thanks for sharing those. :thumb:

Every rugby player I know is severely brain damaged..

I once considered myself a down for anything sort of guy, but maggot fest made me reassess that..

However; in my view, rugby style tackling is the safest, and most efficient.
