you don't have to be an x's and o's guy to have noticed during recent big dances the emphasis on defense in college basketball, as we saw again last night in the w.s.u.-gonzaga game. for the cougars to go into the kennel and hold a gonzaga team with that much talent to under 50 points is just incredible.
in fact, tony bennett is but one of the three young coaches leading their teams to national rankings on the strength of their "d". the others: brad stevens at butler, and chris lowery at southern illinois. note than none of these schools is going to recruit a mcdonald's all-american, ever, yet all three will wind up in the top 20 at the end of the year.
i know tinkle gets it, i know robin selvig has preached defense for decades now, and i know krysko is trying desperately to imbue his bucks team with a defensive mindset (although they were woeful against the warriors last night.) defense was a tradition at montana through the heathcote-montogmery-taylor-morrill era, and as much as the return of the zoo, montana must reclaim this defensive mentality if we're to restore our basketball tradition.
