Let’s start with this - as all who read this know, I’m a fan and a diehard supporter of the Grizzlies. I hold great respect for Bobby Hauck and his family and wish him and the assistants we’re losing the very best. Hauck will go down as Montana’s 2nd best coach ever, with really only the elusive search for a national title being the one thing he couldn’t achieve. His first tenure built up an in-conference dominance that may never be seen again. His second tenure revitalized the fan base, stopped a post-season absence that Montana experienced for 3 years, and culminated with a national title trip in 2023. Coach Bilima indicated in his press conference that he has been looking for quite some time for someone that could run the type of defense he wants at Illinois. Apparently had a list of people he was interested in. When he became aware that Bobby had retired, he reached out to him on Thursday. He stated that they agreed to maybe talk again on Friday since Bobby had several calls from different people interested in his services. Coach B called Bobby on Friday and was not able to get a hold of him. He was concerned that Bobby had already accepted a new position.. apparently Bobby was fishing on Friday and out of cell service.
Sounds like maybe they talked again on Saturday and he offered Bobby the job. Sounds like Coach B had no discussion or offer for the job to Bobby prior to that..

"He later said Thursday that he had not talked with Hauck until Feb. 5. He added that they talked again Feb. 6 and booked Hauck a plane ticket to Illinois on Feb. 7. Hauck said they "were talking pretty serious by Sunday (Feb. 8)."

He flew to Illinois on Monday and was announced as the hire that afternoon.

Hauck said he didn't think he was done with coaching when he left UM and added that he got "quite a few calls right away" about other coaching offers. Those included two opportunities with NFL teams for special teams or defense, Bielema said he learned from Hauck during their phone call Feb. 5.

Bielema noted he was worried Hauck took one of those jobs when he couldn't reach him Feb. 6. He added that he later learned the unanswered calls were because Hauck was out of cell phone service while fishing in Montana.

Bielema said he doesn't have his coordinators on the road recruiting any longer. Instead, he sends his recruiting coaches out."

A well-written piece, and either scenario is plausible. I will have lunch in the near future with one of Coach Hauck's cousins here in Billings. And maybe he will have some insight into how all of this happened but I doubt it--Bobby is pretty tight-lipped. Remember, this isn't 1926 and the era of party lines, typewriters and passenger trains. This Is 2026 where you can wake up in Billings or Missoula and go to bed in Shanghai or Melbourne, this is the era of high-speed internet and AI, where change can happen lightning fast !!!

At this point, I think 🤔 our efforts are better directed towards discussing Coach Kennedy, our remaining staff, incoming new staff, and our kids and possible schematic changes, like dumping the 3-3-5 in favor of an interchangeable 4-3-4/4-2-5. Seems to me this is the perfect opportunity to make the change with potentially a new DC in addition to a new head coach.

I guess what I'm saying is Bobby's gone and good luck to him and Godspeed--he will always be an important part of UM football's history and legacy, and most of us will keep an eye 👁 on him and how his 3-3-5 fares in Illinois. But we have bigger fish to fry going forward in the land of " A River Runs Through It, " " Yellowstone" and its new spinoffs, and GRIZ athletics, especially our beloved football team. : ) !!!
