The Big Sky Conference

Anyone who claims the Big Sky was weaker 2010-2019 than it is this decade or the decade prior is forgetting how good EWU was, particularly on offense in this era. They had more NFL players on offense in that era than any other Big Sky team ever. Cal Poly, NAU and Southern Utah were so much better 10 years ago compared to now it is night and day. Even Portland State with Barney made the playoffs in this era. Montana State is better now than when Rob Ash was coaching, UM is better without the scholarship limitations lingering from Pflugrad and UC Davis was still fairly new having joined the Big Sky in 2012. UC Davis is better now with an over decade in the conference. Outside of those 3 teams everyone else in the Big Sky was better 2010-2019 than 2020-2025.

A better question would be: Does NAU/Sac state have the same record if their 2025 teams play in 2010?
Solid question, I think so, maybe better. They had some elite athletes this season. Both squads. ButThen, nau goes on the road and loses to hapless weber and misses the playoffs 🤦‍♂️

An even better question would be if Eastern Washington this year would beat their team in 2016, or if any current Big Sky team would beat 2016 EWU. Super Bowl MVP Cooper Kupp, Aaron Neary who played for the Los Angeles Rams and Jake Rodgers who played for the Denver Broncos on the offensive line, Kendrick Bourne who is still playing in the NFL lined up on the other side of the field from Kupp and Nsimba Webster who had a 4 year NFL career in the slot. 2 future NFL players on the line and 3 future NFL players including a future Super Bowl MVP at wide receiver. Is anyone in the 2025 Big Sky competing with 2016 EWU?

I think the 1914 Griz team would be lights out in the current landscape of college football. They figure out that weird forward pass thing and oh boy.

Wouldn't that be a dandy matchup to see those teams vs the griz or cats of 2025? That'd be fun

Spuds had a pretty good recruiting haul and are still slowly finding their footing after the drop-down.

We'll all keep sleeping on them...eventually, they will rise to challenge for year-over-year conf championships and deep playoff runs.
I think the Spuds caught lightening in a bottle with Eck and are struggling to duplicate that post-Eck.

Hasn’t Idaho been pretty good historically as an FCS program? I am too young to remember them before they moved up to FBS where they struggled but they had some great players in the 1980s and 1990s like Mark Schlereth.

Yes, but those numbers are irrelevant, really. They were good under Eck, but I think they’ll find that duplicating that isn’t as easy as plug and play.

Deep playoff runs are not part of their history. 8-14 all-time in the playoffs, 2 semifinals in 14 appearances is not a lot, but 4-8 in the first round spells a lot of early exits. For those doing the math, that's including first round byes in '23 and '24. We'll see if they can make the big recruiting class into something or not.

Yes, but in relation to the Griz in my formative years and time in Missoula - they were always good or very good...

Compare Griz performance to your numbers above in the same timeframes...

Between those times we went to 8 NC games. That is their entire playoff history and their first year in the I-AA playoffs was 1982, a year we won in Missoula and then lost the playoff game in Moscow and they lost in the round.

Hmmm I don't know, it seems like EWU and ISU are about as good as UM.
And Yale is probably better than Cats. Yale had 4 turnovers, 2 in redone. Cats lucky to advance.

Yale had more first downs and more total offense. All-works no. 41 had his 2 tackles and no sacks, I believe.

And Davis put on quite a show disrespecting and pushing his coach.
