The Big East Blows

Two years in a row, the Big East has underperformed in the NCAA men's basketball tournament.

Undeterred by last year's Big East debacle in the 2010 NCAA men's basketball tournament, the 2011 selection committee awarded the conference 11 tourney bids. And now, only two of those eleven teams remain in the tournament.

When will the NCAA stop giving credit where credit is not due?

I knew they shouldn't have 11 teams in but they truly sucked it up. I was a bit surprised that Notre Dame and Pitt both got beat. Syracuse is always over rated. Nova didnt need to be in. St. John's prob wins their first game if not for an ACL injury in the Big East Tourney. Still doesn't mean 11 teams in.

Eleven teams from one conference -- any conference -- is a joke.

If the NCAA isn't careful, they're going to destroy their golden goose. I know a lot of people, myself included, that just hasn't been as excited about the "madness" this year as we are most years. I think a lot of it has to do with that ridiculous "first" round, but also the selection of so many big conference teams. I think even the most hardened "big" conference guy would admit that it's far more exciting to watch a relatively unknown mid-major versus a big conference team than the 8th place Big East team playing the 7th place ACC team.

I love it! Having to listen to Dickie V complain about the power conferences not getting teams in over mid-majors just ticks me off every year. The last 2 years have been great to see these teams get beat, and this year, get beat handily in some cases.

However, Montana is in a power conference in the FCS, so we have to be careful what we say in letting teams get at-large bids......

The Big East blows, for some damn reason, this was the year I picked 2 Big East teams in the final 4, with one winning it all. I should have stuck to rules of prior years, but no..........both my picks are gone from that conference, and my bracket is the worse in my life.

Back to picking Pittsburgh choking before the elite 8, and Notre Dame penciled in for 1 victory only. Also need to stick to my guns about 3 point shooting teams always do in for a let down in the 1st 2 rounds.

Next year, I am back to sticking to basic basketball rules again when it comes to the NCAA tournament.

Ditto. I'm 25th out of 40. I've never been worse than 5th and usually in the money...uh, I mean bragging rights.

I love that the city of Richmond with two mid-major schools (Richmond and VCU) has put just as many schools in the sweet 16 as the Big East.

Of course in my own stupidity my bracket had 3 Big East teams in the final four, two of which are long gone now. Guess I believed the hype as well.

I am not sticking up for the Big East, but teams are picked for the NCAA tournament based on their regular season performance, not how they will fare in the tourney. Supposedly teams are selected w/o any regard to their conference affiliation.

How would Big Sky football fans feel if for 5 straight years the BSC playoff teams lost in the first round but then in year 6 we had teams go 11-0, 10-1, 10-1, 9-2, but the selection committee said "sorry but your teams lose in the 1st round too often, therefore only 2 teams are being selected".?

If you don't think the 11 teams belonged who would you have left out & who would you replace them with? Don't forget one of the 2 remaining Big East teams was actually the 11th team from that conference (Marquette).

Very true but Nova was a no go for sure. Lost 10 of last 15. That is something that the committee has said numerous times they look at. "last 10" or whatever. Colorado in probably. There have also been plenty of times a team lower in the standings has been chosen over someone higher in the conference. Just ask VA Tech. None of us can predict the upsets and such but 11 was too many. It dilutes the field a bit.

And how would the Big Sky feel if every year the BCS playoffs were full of CAA teams that had .500 conference records? I personally think a school should have a winning conference record to make the NCAA's (with the one exception of winning your conference tourney).

That would ironically eliminate the only two teams that the Big Least has left: UConn and Marquette, along with Villanova. Any other team from any other conference - with the possible exception of a few select schools from the the ACC and SEC - isn't even on the map if they finish the season like Villanova did.

Teams that should have been in before at least Nova, and even UConn and Marquette:

Cleveland State
St. Mary's
Colorada

I'd even say Montana deserved it before Villanova

Putter... you actually LISTEN to Dickie... that why my remote has a mute button. That diaper-dandy (as in Depends) could dry a load of clothes in about two minutes with all the hot air that comes out him. He's Nails on a Chalkboard anymore... I'll watch Joy Behar before V-man. Okay, fine... I lied... Nobody should have to listen to the red-headed maniac.
