Thanks for nothing Griz fans

Maine fans thought that Montana fans would get behind the Black Bears in their game against Texas Tech, but it was reported in the Portland Press Herald that Montana fans just sat on their hands. I thought with Montana being a rural isolated school as well, that you guys would root for us. Now I'm ticked off that I was cheering for you to beat Louisiana Tech.......how stupid I was. Oh well......at least you lost too :D . See you on the football field September 4, and in the Lady Griz tourney in December. Go Black Bears!

If the people who reported were talking about us (Montana fans) not cheering as loudly for your team as when Montana was actually playing, well what do you expect!

As for sitting on our hands, I know that I was cheering for the Bears and so were the Griz fans around me. And to think that I actually used to like reading your posts!!!!!!! Thanks a lot to you too!!!! :-?

I guess we will have to wait until fall to settle this!!!!

By the way, you might as well leave your mascot home on your next visit. Doesn't do much of anything I could see!

I disagree maine jeff, I was sitting in sec 210 right behind the Maine fans and we were cheering for Maine along with their fans as was all the Montana fans around us.

And I agree with Victor about the Maine mascot! What a lame performance, as was TT's cowboy dude mascot. Mascots like that are what make me so proud of Monte!!!

Don't even try to pin any type of blame for Maine's loss on the Montana fans. That is rediculous and the quip about us losing too is just childish.

The early game was BORING. It was sloppy, both teams with TO's back and forth, neither team could hit a three. There was absolutely nothing to cheer about. That's the type of game Maine had to play to win though, so don't expect people to get excited about a slow, sloppy game. It sounds to me there's a little bitterness in defeat and people are just looking for others to blame. Maine had their chance, played TTU tough the whole way, and although Montana fans may not have been going crazy, they were definitely pulling for Maine.

Both Montana and La Tech are 15 points better than either team in the early game. Go Techsters! Make us Montanans proud and show the nation that both of our teams did not get the respect that either deserved going into the tourney.

I had fun pulling for Maine to win, but also yelling at their poor mascot. You can't expect Montana fans to cheer hard for Maine since we were all saving our energy for the next game. There was just no way we would get that much into it. You're just lucky a big crowd showed up for that game so those teams didn't have to pay in a quiet arena. At least they got that much out of a tournament atmosphere.

Jeff, the Portland press was wrong if they did report that. I was at the game and the Crowd cheering for Maine...No question. It's not like they were going nuts, but it was certainly there. I would think Maine would have liked how the crowd was behind them. Ask the players or the fans that were there. They'll tell you.

Hate to tell you,but everybody around me were cherring for Maine.Granted we were way up in section 107 row 11,we were still cheering for maine. I would have loved to see Maine & Griz play each other to see who is the better. Maybe our administrations can get it together & schedule home & home games. to make your trip worthwhile,Maine could play MSU bobcats while they are here.

I foud it ironic that after posts like the following,
MaineJ had the nerve to berate GRIZ fans.

I wouldn't take him to seriously - this appears to be his MODUS OPERANDI

Thanks for all of the response (I knew I would get some   ). I obviously didn't expect Montana fans to "cheer their hearts out" like they would for their own team, and regarding our mascot......he is done by one of the service fraternities on campus, and as far as I know is done by numerous people, so that person may have been the only one available to do Bananas (the mascot) on such short notice. It has been discussed that the athletic dept. take over the reigns of mascot duties, but that is very controversial due to the longstanding tradition with the fraternity. An FYI.....the look of the mascot will also be changing for the coming season according to "rumors".

To usmc67......The Maine womens hoop team is in a home and home deal with the Lady Griz.......they came to Orono 2 years ago, and Maine goes to Missoula this coming season for the Lady Griz tourney.

See y'all September 4th!!!

And here I thought all Griz fans sat on their butts during games? :) Are they sitting on their hands and then their butts?

Maine had hoped to win over the Montana fans. It didn't happen. They sat on their hands.

"We didn't want to just show up," said Traversi, a junior guard. "We wanted to compete with this team. I wanted to give my team a boost tonight, but it wasn't enough.
From the Portland paper.
First, don't believe everything you read in the papers. Second, isn't the fact that fans were there good enough for you guys. Maine averages 847 fans a game at neutral sites, and there were certainly more fans than that up in Missoula. Heck, I have been to plenty of home games in women's basketball (not the Grizzlies) where the fans sit on their hands for the home team.
So, come on over to Missoula for the tourney and see what the atmosphere is like.
