Thank you Jim O'Day

I posted this in another eGriz forum, but it's appropriate here:

"While waiting for an Allegiant flight to Missoula from the AZ airport last Sat., I heard a guy who was/is, connected w/ both the UM & Carroll programs, say that Jim was told to fire Pflu; Jim refused & was fired, as well. I do not know who this individual was, but I was in on a conversation w/ others. It may be fact, or not. I'm just throwing this out there. FWIW"

If this is true, it shows Mr. O'Day stands on principle, perhaps to a fault. But, it shows the loyalty Jim has for his people. If...it...is...true. It also suggests his firing was not based on any decisions, etc., HE made regarding the controversy.

A special thanks does need to go out to JOD.

Thanks for selling out our football program and looking the other way while the single biggest crime spree in college football history took place under your watch and you swept it under the rug.

That bought us a ton of PR that is looking really, really good right now. No AD in the history of UM athletics has got us headlines on ESPN, Fox News, Wall Street Journal and USA Today.

Best wishes in your new endeavors.

Cordially,

AG1

I will appologize for this rude and boorish post by alpha (little a). As a unknown fan you always exhibited to me the class you had. I am sorry but every family has a uncle like this but please be reassured that the rest of the GRIZ family wish you nothing but the best.

+10.What else do you expect from alpha and azgrizfan? Robin and Jim are first class standup individuals and these guys (alpha and azgrizfan) can't see past their own ego. Never let the facts get in the way of your own personal agenda guys.

Oday will be a great Montanan and a Griz the rest of his life and will be held in higher regard than Royce Engstrom long after Royce has packed up and gone back home to South Dakota or faded into the ether.

Thanks for your work Mr ODay it has been appreciated.

Good luck in your future endeavors sir.

O'Day presided over the most thuggish era of Montana football and did next to nothing to stop these actions due to a desire to win over all else.

So long and on to better people who will win with class and a clean program.

Like 100% of my many friends all of us thought Jim is and was a great man. I will miss him and I am sorry to see him go. He was a man for standing up and taking the shot in the heart instead of doing what he knew was wrong. We need more like him.

Yeah, we will move on............. I have to laugh when I think about how clean the program will become because of this jolt.

Wanted a clean AD at Montana to clean up the dirty program.

Wanted and needed a clean and good football coach at Montana to clean up a bunch of out of control dirty students ASAP.

Applications must go to the honorable Montanat president that needs help in cleaning up the rampant rape by students and non US students on the campus. Note: The rape numbers have gone down since 1982 but more must be done to keep bad behavior from showing up on the front page of the Missoulian!

Yes, we all will be clean from now on. You might not know how to coach but you need to look and act clean!

This is clean Umista reporting from some bar in Montana via "more piti pat" phone! Good night!

Alpha, i don't disagree with your logic and your position. however, saying Jim presided over the worst crime spree in college football history is stupid, and you know it. you are usually pretty good at making your point without having to embelish that much.

We miss you, Jim. We need you. Hell, I need you. I’m a mess without you. I miss you so damn much. I miss being with you, I miss being near you. I miss your laugh. I miss your scent, I miss your musk. When this all gets sorted out, I think you and me should get an apartment together.

I understand. Sometimes it's difficult to see clearly out of those maroon colored glasses. I have no agenda...Jim O'Day is a great guy, first class stand-up individual that made a mistake and paid for it with his job. Happens every day in the corporate world...you chicken-little-the-sky-is-falling-types need to get over yourselves.

When I was at Oklahoma U, the athletic dorm (first class hotel, actually) barred non athletes from entering, but somehow managed to have shooting, have a couple players involved in gun trading, half involved in drug selling, shaving points, and, the ever reliable rape or two....even as a senior at UM I remember some athletes causing "scandal" by being paid to watch grass grow as part of their scholarship...As long as the rewards are there, and alumni think there is some special mark of whatever if a team wins a lot of games, this will go on....UM just happened to be a visible program at its level and it shocked a lot of people, even though, bad behavior has been discussed on this site for years.....the house is being cleaned...now, I hope other places follow.

The relationship is just turning platonic...

I appreciated everything Jim brought to the table, just wish he could have made more impact on players who apparently did not care what their actions resulted in.

With that said, I got to know the O'days, while coaching baseball in Jumbo East LL. I was fortunate to coach a great group of kids, and deal with great families, amongst those, Brian, and his parents. It is always a little awkward getting to know new kids, and families every year, and as kids get older, the more difficult it gets. Families like the O'days made coaching so much easier, and I wish all families would pass on their attitude to every family when it comes to letting coaches coach, and stepping aside.

Not one time, did any of the O'days question our coaching at any time, no matter the circumstances at hand. They naturally trusted coaches with their son. When they did say something, it was always encouraging, and positive. They never one time got into the politics created by other parents, and players. During a bad incident, or difficult decision, it was always nice to see the O'days. Why? We knew they were always positive, and passed that along to their son, Brian. We as coaches would never have to worry about how they felt, or what they thought. We knew, without doubt, they trusted us coaches in every aspect.

One year, Brian, hurt his wrist, or shoulder, playing basketball. He felt so bad, and was at practice and games supporting the team, and offering encouragement. He wanted to be out there helping the team. After a few days of thinking, and observing Brian, we knew he wanted to do whatever he could for the team. We talked to the O'days about the injury, and if they would be open to Brian still contributing to the team. Sure enough, they said "If Brian wants to play, we are on board." As it turned out, Brian got his one inning of defense, and one at bat (just bunting or looking to walk), and beyond that he became our team's designated pinch runner (little league rules). He absolutely loved it the few weeks of contributing the only way he could.

Most parents would not have had the open and willing mindset they did. Things like that are why their son was a team captain, and leader. He learned a lot from his parents. Believe it or not, that brought our team more together, and we had a much better season than we were expecting.

I cannot speak as to if Jim's trust in the coaches and players he oversees was handled with the same mind set or not. I can say, dealing with the O'days, as a coach, was a breathe of fresh air for us coaches, and their attitude was one we loved. Based on my experience with them, I very much believe Jim believed 100% in his coaches, and how they handled things. I cannot see Jim as being a micro manager type, or interfering with the people he work with/for. He trusted, and supported his coaches, just like he did everyone.

Too bad, a few too many people were not responsible, or smart enough to realize how good they really had it with his approach. I don't think he was a victim of the decision, but a victim of a few too many given a foot, and taking a mile.

Again, my best to the Jim, and his family. They have every reason in the world to be proud of the family they are.

Bingo. Sounds like a great guy who got burned. :thumb:

Yes Thank You Jim O'Day - I have a Nephew who is now 26 years old & developmentally disabled. He loves watching sports & is now a Huge Griz fan after being brainwashed, in his early years, by his bobcat dad. My Nephew moved to Missoula a couple years ago & wanted to sit with us at Griz basketball games. So I go to the ticket office & they tell me it wouldn't be possible since we were GSA members. So I send off an e-mail to Jim O'Day explaining our situation. The same day I recieved an e-mail back from O'Day telling me to come buy my Nephew's season tickets one row behind us! We will miss you Mr. Jim O'Day!
