A lot more continuity in coaching and establishing a system at EWU over the last decade. EWU is on their 2nd Head Coach with a great passing offensive scheme. Meanwhile the GRIZ have been through how many different Head Coaches, coordinators, staffs, different offenses, schemes, and strategies?
The GRIZ have went from Hauck and a questionable OC (Phenecie), which was more of a ball control, ground and pound type offense, which was not QB friendly for stat stuffing. Then, enter Pflugrad who had to implement his offense a little slower than he and many others would have liked, due to personnel not suited for his system, or needed time to execute his system.
Unfortunately, Pflugrad got screwed after his 2nd season, a season in which that offense and JJ were exciting in the 2nd half of the season. I'd argue that offense and JJ was every bit as effective as EWU, the 2nd half of that season. No doubt, JJ and Pflu's offense would have put up huge numbers had Pflu been able to stay through JJ's senior season.
Enter Delaney, with an entirely different offense. That offense limited JJ's potential. Despite that, how many games was he the main reason for the GRIZ pulling out games they had no business winning? Now, enter Stitt, with another system, which is another year or 2 away from having all the players he wants and needs for his offense to live up to it's potential. Last season the GRIZ OL was inconsistent, qb's injured, and difficult circumstances for an offense to find consistency, let alone be dominating. The injuries alone deterred the whole offense and QB development. Enter this season, for the most part, a whole new group of WR's for QB's to learn. I fully expect this offense to be inconsistent through the 1st 4 to 6 games. I feel this offense will make gradual progress as the season moves forward. Got to give Stitt at least 3 full seasons to give a fair evaluation of his offense and program direction.
EWU's stability in QB, WR, and overall offense is a huge selling point and benefit for potential recruits. Like it or not, due to stability, they are an offensive jaugernaut, year in and year out. Even then, that offense can struggle from time to time. The GRIZ defense proved that last season. Their offense and QB's looked average, at best in that game.
EWU had patience and it has paid off. It is very important for GRIZ NATION to have patience and stay loyal to Stitt as he builds this program, his way. That is one reason I love the Stitt hire. I see him as someone who will not be willing to jump ship, unless the perfect opportunity comes his way. I can only see him leaving the GRIZ for a traditional BCS power program. I am excited to see how his offense and program develops as he gives the GRIZ much needed stability.
In this case, rather than bitch, moan, criticize GRIZ coaches, qb's, players, etc, I feel EWU should be applauded for having patience paying off. Then again, I am sure their fans feel similar about their defense as we do about our offense. I feel the GRIZ are much closer to EWU's offense than EWU's defense is to the GRIZ defense. I honestly believe Stitt will be the man to lead the GRIZ back to national prominence. The question is, how long will it take?
