Televised Games

and that is why griz psych is the man! :thumb:

On a side note, I am truely depressed and the state of Griz football on tv this year. Big Suck TV had finally seemed to have gotten their shit together and now WHAM! like Royce pulling out the anal beads all at once...we got nothing on the net...except of course griz psych...who is doing this out the goodness of his soul.

Now I of course have the option on buying cable and hooking up a hundred feet of wire to my tv in order to watch the 8 games on ROOT and any playoffs (did I say PLAYOFFS???) on ESPN or ESPN2. But what a waste of money. What does cable go for nowdays? $100-$120/month? Fuch that. With two little babies at home, I'll be lucky to get to one or two games all season at the bar. I even emailed ROOT and said I would pay to watch the games on the net. Could you sell me a Big Sky Conference pass? "No. Maybe in the future," was their answer. I least I have the Griz in Greely this year...my wife being thrilled about that.

So griz pych or any other kind soul...I will be glad to send you a donation for your services or future legal bills if you would be so kind to put our beloved GRIZ on the web. Serious about the donations...just PM me. Thanks and GO GRIZ!!!!

These "last minute" TV issues with non-conference games have occurred for the Griz every year for several years now, with a solution not coming until late in the summer. The difference is, in years past the athletic director was working hard to hammer out a last minute agreement.

This year, who the hell knows if Royce Engstrom's athletic department has what it takes to iron out these issues. I'm pretty sure Royce Engstrom's athletic department hasn't broken ground on the academic center this summer, as Royce Engstrom said it would in a March letter to Griz donors.
It doesn't look good for televised non-conference games.

Doesn't MSU use Learfield as well?
Learfield has no rights on Big Sky Conference games and unlimited rights on "MOST out of Conference games.

Max picked up everything it could for both the Griz and the kitties, the Griz had only one game available that was not on Root Sports that was cost efficient and not owned by "gouge 'em for all you can get" learyfield

I think UM is hampered by its relationship with KPAX, in the past KPAX has paid more than double what would be considered "fair market value". So now learfield probably feels that there is a basis for asking a premium price for the OOC games.

It was an advantage that KPAX paid that, in that it put more money into um athletic dept. But now KPAX doesn't want to play if they cant get the whole package, and that's understandable too since that was part of how they made money.

It may take a few years for learfield to understand that um games do not warrant a premium price.

I happen to be a corporate sponsor for the Cats, so I called by Rep from Learfield Sports and asked him how much they have to do with the T.V. Broadcasts of MSU and the Bad news bears. He said they have NOTHING to do with broadcast rights. He said they are just in charge or licensing fees and branding of those things. KPAK was the one who chose not to broadcast the games that ROOT didn't.

What KPAX has paid per game in the past is far, far lower than what learfield is asking now. I don't believe a big out of state media corporation cares one damn bit if a Griz game is televised or not, they charge the same nation wide rate every where (the going rate). If they gave the Griz a discount, isn't it pretty fair to assume that every broadcast station in the nation, regardless of market area would want and demand the same discount?

Should McDonalds and Burger King cut the hamburger price in cities with less than a hundred thousand eaters just because less people drive by their front doors?

Again...learfield has nothing to do with T.V. broadcasting.

The University of Montana generally and Griz sports specifically has entered into its most disfunctional era since before UM footballers wore leather helmets... Q: Who's in charge? A: Nobody. If you think the hue and cry for Captain Queeg's head has maxed out - you ain't seen nuthin'...

the rights to the three remaining games are owned by learfield and the price to air is the same as if they where selling these games in large metro areas like Atlanta, Omaha or St Louis. NO ONE with Montana media connections can bid anywhere near the price asked and learfield will see them not aired before they'll lower the price here and have the larger metro area media outlets want the same lowered price.

bidding on the three out of conferenceance games also brings up the cost of having to rent hd vans for just part of the season rather than 12 straight weeks. Supply and demand says the single price per week at three will be much higher than the price times 12. Then you'd also need to look at media travel cost to App State.

So thanks to the learfield contract, We won't be seeing 3 Griz Games this year. :(

You sure about that?... Traditionally in the world of syndicated TV cost is scaled to the number of homes reached. It wouldn't make economic sense for syndicators to to price themselves out of the smaller markets.

Not true. Learfieild absolutely controls the price for stations to broadcast. The guy you talked to is right that KPAX "chose not to broadcast" but that's because the asking price is through the roof. I recently talked to someone at KPAX about this.

I'm just going off what I heard from reps from kpax and maxmedia.
kpax won't be airing anything (learfield was named as the reason)

and why max only picked up the SUU game (learfield was again mentioned)

so, never mind I'm sure they were both wrong ;)

My info came from two separate people employed by two separate media outlets

Yeah I'm sure both of our sources are wrong though and KPAX is deciding not to air the Griz games "just because" like this Bobcat fan is saying

Just called my rep again and read to him this thread. He said that unless learfield in missoula is ran different than any other in the country, then someone is lying to both of you. He is going to call missoula tomorrow and get the name and quote from both KPAX and Learfield.

I did. He said Max media and root. The reason it is not on Max Media is because there is a conflict with ABC and drake won't move the game back an hour. He said it had nothing to do with them.
