How many first team reps you suppose those scholarship athletes got over the past 4 weeks?

It's not an excuse. It's a fact. And the FACT is that those scholarship kids held Valpo in check for 68 of 74 plays. The fact you like to ignore this speaks volumes as to your agenda.

Valpo has zero scholarships...that is a fact. Those kids represented themselves very well and deserve credit. For you to say the success they had was because of 3 players not playing is a lame ass excuse. My agenda at this point is to bust your excuse making balls.

Go back and read the thread again, Einstein. Show me where I criticized Valpo's play. Show me where I said they didn't represent themselves well. YOU are the shitstain that keeps bitching because we didn't hang 70 on them, or beat them by 50. Trying to have a reasoned discussion with you is like trying to engage '75.

Rainey was saying that Strong is going to take some time to return he just had surgery on his hand this week and they plan on him missing a few weeks. Sandry reinjured himself and Epperly is banged up as well. So yeah the secondary is in dire need of depth already so no real choice but to play him.

See, now THIS is a legitimate bitch about this coaching staff....how do we get ourselves into a position where we don't have enough depth at a position to field competitive players? We knew we were thin at corner and safety....that WILL get exposed by not just UW but EWU and anybody else we play.

So true. Wonder if there's one or two of the billion receivers stitt signed in the last couple of classes that played safety/corner in high school that could make the transition. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and arguably the best cb ever to play at um was recruited as a receiver. Who knows, might just find another gem.

No doubt the missing scholarships hurt the defense more than the offense, but no surprise there - Stitt is an offensive-minded coach after all. The D should catch up now that we have those schollies back...

I believe true freshman safety Isaiah Banks was suited for the game and maybe was only an injury away from coming in. We didn't want to play Calhoun as a true freshman but that worked out. Maybe Banks also will be thrown into the fire and end up being good to great right away. The kid was one of the most highly touted recruits in the Big Sky. If he's going to end up on the field, it might as well be before conference play begins to get him a little seasoning...

I guess I don't understand why the loss of scholarships hurt the D only. Why wouldn't the coach spread the loss of them evenly over the whole team

There was a sequence of speculation over on the “FCS Games” thread about whether the Griz might move into the top-25 because so many (8) ranked teams lost. Several posters thought they would, but I said:

Possible, but doubtful. The Griz final score looked reasonably impressive, but losses to FBS opponents on the road generally don't hurt much, and can help if they keep it close.

He doesn’t exactly give the Griz a glowing endorsement, but he did make it one of his “five takeaways from FCS week 1” and that might be enough to nudge some voters to rank the Griz higher. Will be interesting.

There was some feeling that Montana, the New York Yankees of FCS programs, was flying under the radar in the preseason. Having finished just 6-5 and with a losing Big Sky record last season, the Grizzlies weren't filling many preseason Top 25 ballots. But with 17 returning starters and some transfers coming in for coach Bob Stitt, they might have deserved more attention simply from the program's history. The Griz got the necessary result with a 45-23 win over Valparaiso, but it was a struggle for three quarters against a struggling non-scholarship opponent from the Pioneer Football League. A loss to Washington should come next Saturday and a win over Savannah State (a rout, right?) will follow that, so the non-conference schedule may not help the Griz's playoff resume. Add in a fan base that likes to question Stitt's job security and a cloud could hover over the program this season.

I bet Stitt would say they were spread evenly, but as others have noted we've signed a lot of WR's. But I would admit that It is bad luck to have both safeties injured before the season begins - many college and NFL teams would be hit hard losing both starters. That's why I wonder about Banks - if he and Epperly emerge, at least we'd have good depth when the others return. Not sure if Korey Alexander is in the mix...
