TE Greg Hardy's commnets on Griz QB's: (found on MontanaGrizzlies.com)

Hardy had positive things to say about the three quarterbacks currently in good standing.

“I think Shay looks pretty good,” said Hardy. “He’s just so smart. He reminds me of (former starting QB Andrew) Selle – maybe not the arm strength but he’s very good at getting the ball out before you come out of your break, so it’s there.

“Trent has work to do, but Trent will be very fine after he learns the play book and he settles down and becomes more comfortable.

I’m excited for this Billings West kid (Gustafson). I saw him play at our camp and he’s going to be a very good player. I don’t know if he’ll be ready yet, but hopefully now that he knows there’s a possible opening, he’ll come in and be able to pick up things quick.”

Hardy and the rest of the Griz are hoping for the best for Johnson.

The only thing that really surprised me a bit from Hardy's comments were that of SSH not having the same arm strength as Selle. I never really thought of Selle as a real hard throwing QB however he did throw really well and maybe what Hardy was talking about was not just a deep thrower but quick/crisp/in position which Selle certainly was better at compared to what I've seen from SSH.

Hardy was also just a freshman with the deer in the headlights look when Selle was throwing his way

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it the consensus that the Earl of Sandwich throws a better deep ball than TM?

jj gave defense's problems with his running ability.....trent is the only qb we currently have that can bring that dimension to this position with any effectiveness...seeing him play in the spring game his passing seemed good, not as good as jj was, therefore, he would need to improve to be the top pick.

Uh... I wouldn't go that far but I'd say of all the QBs McKinney showed that he needs the most improvement on downfield passing and short-game accuracy.

So just improvement in the short game and the long game for McKinney? That sounds kind of bleak, BW.
SSH has been around longer, right? He should have a good grasp of the playbook and what's expected by now.

The reason you are surprised is that YOU are the one who anointed 'hyphenated" as have a big arm, and all of the lemmings bought into to it because you are never wrong in your player evaluations. I NEVER saw that from him in practice, and I watched him many times. You think he must have a big arm because he is a big kid. But, he throws a wounded duck, has no touch on swing passes, and rainbows his deep throws.

From what I seen last year, I thought that's what we wanted in a starting QB, a goat roper arm. At least S Bar H can see over the offensive line... I think his high school hi-lights showed 60 yards throws... roughly 50 feet further on his "wounded ducks" than our previous starter.

McKinney did a pretty good job on the Griz D in the spring game.

this was my take as well.....he did not air it out because they never gave him the opportunity so i could not tell on his long ball...........he can run as well as jj if not better so i hope he has a strong arm for the long ones to #80 sean haynes and can learn the playbook so he can play this year.

Those who doubt the deep ball from TM should take a lengthy look at his YouTube highlights from high school.

High school is a lot differnent than college lol especially when it comes to QBs and the passing game......JJ is gonna start and play the whole season so we have nothing to worry about guys!

I won't be worried even if JJ doesn't start. ;)

Good comments you two, Grizzoola and Zirge.

McKinney looked really good in the spring game, running around like a senior rb when he tucket it away and took off out of the pocket. The kid flies and has moves (oozes athleticism). With more experience (on the field, and off it with his head in the playbook), he's going to shine. He's in the same situation as JJ was last fall camp, with the exception of having not thrown 20 very, very short passes the previous year for an avg of about 3 yards.

Just as stated today on ESPN at the Pac 12 media days conference by a head coach, the most important thing a QB does is distribute the ball. And the better he does distributing it to the playmakers, the better the offense is. That can just as equally mean on an option run team as it does on a a wide open passing attack team. Decision making is a key element in that. The ability for the QB to make the right decision at the right time with where to put the football is huge. And finally, the QB needs a certain persona, one that makes team work harder, in the off-season, in practice and in the games. The great QB makes his team better.

Now that is all somewhat difficult, atleast at first, for a very young QB. But it is possible early in his career. JJ did a good of all that last season. Hopefully he is back. If not, someone else needs to step into that role.

As far as Hardy's comments on BG, he must have had a better Griz camp then he did at the Shrine game. At the Shrine game he overthrew a lot of open recievers, and even some completions were high on the target. In fact his very first throw was high (catchable, but still high), and was tipped/intercepted.

Man, now that you think about it all, the QB position is WAY UP IN THE AIR FOR SEASONS TO COME :!: :!: :!:

GO GRIZ, SOMEBODY STEP UP  :-D
