TD got robbed

Gallatin Griz said:
So, if I am not mistaken, this award is voted on by their peers - a coaches vote of all the BSC coaches?

There ya go! They didn't want to admit how terribly wrong they were in their pre-season coaches poll in predicting the Griz would finish in 8th place.

Either that or they are all getting tired of U of M's athletic success and couldn't stand to admit it again.

It's inconceivable!!!

"Why do you keep saying that? I do not think you know what it means!"
It's about a new coach coming into the conference and out-coaching all these veteran coaches. Total egos! Three double OT games and a bad finish in Sac-o-sh@t state and it's not a contest! Obvious coach of the year! We'll be lucky if TDC doesn't bolt next year!

Helen Keller did just as good with her "Coach of the Year" vote as she did with "Mittens."

There is no way that TD did not deserve that award, by a mile.
Ha! This is so apropos. Who votes for the coach of the year award?

I Heard Jim Hayford voted for himself, twice.

I know you posted this as a joke, but with the bsc brass, it wouldn't surprise me. They probably wouldn't even consider counting the votes to be certain it was the correct number. In fact, half the staff is likely still off trying to get sac's yoga studio tournament ready.

Idaho Griz. I've seen that comment several times on here trying to diminish Travis' accomplishments with the fact they were Tinkle's recruits. My question is how did Tinkle do with Tinkle's recruits. And answer is 12-8 and 17-13. And Tinkle had the returning MVP. I heard the same thing on here about Kennedy's recruits. The win against EWU on the road after the double overtime loss ranks in there with some greatest Grizzlies wins.

I figured Katz would win it because everyone seemed to have a hard on because he coached Sac to their first winning record

I've been thinking about that too. The only things I can come up with are that Travis turned a terrible rebounding team into a good rebounding team. He also coached up that talent to be the best defensive team in the conference.

Basically, more reasons to DeCuire should be Conference Coach of the Year.

EWU coach takes a team picked to be second place all the way to.....second place.

SAC coach takes a team picked to be fourth place all the way to.......third place.

TD takes a Griz team picked 8th all the way to a conference championship and hosting the tournament.

2 of those 3 get coach of the year, one does not. WRONG.

PITCHFORKS!

TORCHES!

Let's get the party started. :ugeek:

Um....do we have a "safety" torch we can give to CDA? Like a flashlight or something that won't cause a fire?

Yes he deserved it, but look at it this way Griz fans: Do you really want your coach attracting more attention and accolades than he already is? Be careful what you wish for.

Just two weeks left until the annual "interview" threads! They're the real March Madness for backwater conferences.

Good point eagle. Geeze. I hope we can keep TD here for a few years. I know it's early, but three or four years like this, maybe with a couple signature wins, and he will be attracting attention.

We will never keep good coaches until we can pay good coaches. We will never be able to pay good coaches until we leave the BSC. Sure, there will be people who say that TDC "loves Montana" or "wants to coach his alma mater," but the truth is: anyone who wouldn't take a pay raise like Tinkle or Krysko took probably shouldn't be in the position to make important decisions in the first place.

We are currently a stepping stone.

CDA, there are coaches who are the exception to this. Few could have taken better paying jobs in the power conferences. He has not, to date. Robin Selvig has been true to himself and the school. Who is to say there will never be a GRIZ Men's Basketball coach who will be here long term, and not be money driven?

With that said, I do believe Travis plans to coach at a program in a power conference. Yes, the chances are slim for the GRIZ to find a lifer at Montana.

Few makes over a million dollars per year. Not hard to stay in Spoky for that. I'm not sure what offers Selvig has had.

The biggest problem with TDC obviously getting robbed is that it cheapens the award for everyone. It becomes a participation ribbon/popularity contest and when someone deserving actually wins it is kind of a "so what". I don't trust any award that is given by solely by peers anyway because (as we've seen) politics play too big a part of the outcome. Maybe a 1/3 peers, 1/3 sports writers, 1/3 fans would create a better balance and a more credible outcome?

I didn't say the "Tinkle glow" effect -- if there was one -- made sense. In fact, I said it seemed stupid. I simply suggested that it might have given voters an added excuse to not give him the award ... along with (possibly) jealousy, race, DeCuire's "rookie" status, or whatever.

This reminds me of the year Jared Allen won the fcs national defensive player of the year award, but didn't win conference defensive player of the year...

We can all guess and not know what the factors were. It would be nice to know why coaches voted for who they did. I cannot find a legitimate reason for DeCuire not winning it. Katz likely got the reward for Sac State achieving program 1sts. Hayford probably got his votes for beating Indiana, and solid RPI for conference. I am more surprised at Hayford's sharing the honor than Katz. Nonetheless, DeCuire most exceeded expectations and has arguably the best team going into the conference tournament.

...all of the above...
...the biggest hose job of all time...
...gave eastern to much credit for the big 10 win...

... :wtf: ...

Katz - 3 votes
Hayford - 3 votes
DeCuire - 2 votes
Robinson - 1 vote

And you can't vote for yourself...
