It's not important, the only thing important about that rule is that it ruined football.

I couldn't disagree more. I'll acknowledge that it's a growing and evolving rule that needs to continue to be improved upon, but I think better protecting players from hits that can have devastating long term effects is more important than a hard hit that makes the crowd cheer for a minute. Love it or hate it the rule is making coaches at least at the college and high school levels teach better tackling techniques. Players are also being taken care of better when they have head injuries. I'll continue to believe that protecting a player's brain and his future outside of football is way more important than unnecessary hits just because "that's how it used to be".

then i guess you better find something else to occupy your time. maybe making wine? i'm sure they'll love you on the napa valley grape message board!

The game has evolved greatly over many decades. Athletes have become bigger and maybe faster. Field conditions are faster with griz grass (not weed) and allow cuts and moves that could not be made on wet natural turf. Helmets and pads have already gotten better and currently being improved. The game is changing and will continue to.

Similar sentiments were uttered in 1906 when the forward pass was implemented to (gasp) save lives and keep football from being banned. If those sentiments won out instead of the evolution of the sport, football wouldn’t exist. Today, we are facing a similar issue. Football must change or it will become a thing of the past.

When I saw the initial replay of the block, two things that stood out to me: one, the view showed two helmets hitting from a semi upright position. (that is what the official saw, and I saw). Two,: I immediately saw a flag thrown which you could see in the replay. The flag came out immediately and the official called the helmet to helmet, not knowing who the players were. We need to protect the players and the rule is good. You can argue all year about whether it should or should not be called, But, I would much rather it be called than see players coming off the field on stretchers.

My question would be; if there were no hard helmets on either of the players, would the block have been the same or would the blocker have better technique and lead with the shoulder/body instead?

I think that player safety should be the first criteria in judging the rule and its enforcement. Mr. Leach is concerned about the 15yard penalty and whether the officials get it right. Even a photo review from the booth is not enough to pacify Leach. So, we equate head injuries to a speeding ticket as described? I would assume that as a high school football player, Mr. Leach approached his girl friends father with the statement: But, she is only a little bit pregnant!

I would protect the players before worring about a penalty or ejection or sitting out a half than have it on my record that players got concussions because of faulty reasoning by fans and coaches alike. The rule is a good rule and with the booth review should be kept/enforced.

If any of you have ever loaded a football player in an ambulance on the field due to an illegal Helmet hit, speak up. I have done that, have you? It is not worth it.

The instant I saw the replay of the Cookus hit, I knew he would be ejected. There was NO question based on what I have seen called in other college games, including the Griz-Weber game. This may be the first NAU ejection and, perhaps, Cookus and the rest of the team was truly ignorant about what will get you thrown-out these days, but that is on them and Souers for now making sure his team knows what is allowable anymore. The Cookus hit is a 100% illegal hit anymore, whether you or NAU likes the rule. Cookus abundantly showed his ignorance to the rule and he needs a lot of growing up and grabbing a clue in more ways than one, as we saw by his childish behavior after the ejection too.=,which was THE worst response of anyone I have ever seen ejected. Time to grow up Case! Lesson learned? We'll see....Already looking forward to his senior trip here in 2 years. I hope Griz fans won't forget and mock him appropriately.

Yeah, it's like if auto racing had no wrecks, or gladiators only faced defanged lions. Some people are sickened by the sight of no blood.

The rule has done nothing but ruin the game. The referees are very inconsistent when it comes to making the right call. Last weekends call was wrong and all it does is slow down the game..

Your interpretation of that call is almost as bad as that shitty avatar. Now quit fucking around and get the hoochies back on there.

But seriously the targeting is getting a little out of hand.

Did you notice on the BSC Defensive Player of the week video, the first sack by Strahm was helmet to helmet? No flag and they edited that hit into the video.

Player safety is just that, the player and his safety. He doesn't need a bunch of didn't play the game types telling him how to be safe.
