Take the program backward?

Besides Bobby Hauck (and all current DII coaches - because they're just not qualified), please list your top five candidates for the position. Also, please omit any coach whose current base salary is more than twice what we're paying Stitt:

I'm fine with Stitt for now, but if he left, then.

1. Pflu
2. Ty Gregorak
3. Andy Thompson
4. Justin Green
5. Choate

PR, that is a solid list. However, with the expectations that many of the fans have, chances are likely neither of them, could get the GRIZ back to being a Championship contender before 2019.

Pflu, possibly 2018 being he is an offensive coach, and would be my 1st choice, from that list.
Ty, burned too many bridges to be considered, and would he even want to come back?
Thompson, would make sense. What would he do for a smooth transition and keep the offense doing well?
Choate, why would he make a lateral move like this would be?
Justin Green- I feel he would have to hire a great OC and DC, being he has never been in charge of either. I do like his leadership, demeanor, intelligence, and that he is great with people.

Point being, all of them bring questions and/or are also unproven for what GRIZ fans are expecting. I honestly feel, in this case, the best option is patience. What and who GRIZ NATION is expecting is not lining up for this job.

Best Case, would be Hauck returning. Even then, would he be willing to keep with a wide open offense? If not, it might be a few years before we would see great results with him.

Another topic. I could see Hauck going to NAU, but if Thompson got the job, I could see him hiring R. Pflu.

That would be an amazing combination, if we do replace Stitt. :thumb:

1. Pflu - Regents will never approve
2. Ty Gregorak - That bridge is done burned
3. Andy Thompson
4. Justin Green - based on what?
5. Choate -You've got to be kidding....

That leaves Thompson.

I f***[*] love how not even five weeks ago everyone was convinced that Stitt's offense just wasn’t going to work at this level, and now no one questions it.

I am not convinced his offense = National Championship contenders.

I know there are some examples of fast-paced, spread offenses having success...

I just believe ball-control, clock-killing, efficient offenses win in December and beyond. I've tried to keep an open mind about it because Stitt's offense is fun when it's working.

I can't remember a year when I was so disappointed with the defense. Special Teams...I have no words.

Would Thompson ever in a million years consider making a lateral move to become the new Griz D coordinator? Because if not, what other recognizable D-coordinator could replace Semore to appease the frenzied mob?

I question it
The offense set the tone in Ogden, starting the game with three three-and-outs in the first four possessions. The other was an interception.

It does not work consistently. Good defenses scout, prepare and win against it. Not a real mystery; it looks great against the poor teams and racks up a lot of stats.

Backwards, forwards, status quo. Quite a question. Unfortunately I'm getting to the point where it is doesn't matter to me as much as it has in the past and I'm resigned to mediocrity.

I have never been able to discern the trepidation, terror in fact, of those afraid to move in another direction other than Stitt. Nor do I fathom the infatuation with him although I acknowledge his ability to sell it. On the other hand it will be a crap shoot to find someone who might make the big changes needed to move forward. The historical record is clear. Stitt is a 66% (approximately) head coach and there is no reason to think that will change. There will be a few better years, maybe 8-3 or an occasional 9-2 with a conference championship over the course of another 12 years. The rest will be 7-4 or 6-5 unless after one of the occasional successes he moves on. I think after a legitimate search for a replacement the odds are that someone to maintain the status quo are reasonable as the bar is pretty low at present. That might result in improvement and it may not. Downsides are that certainly some recruits verbally committed will change course but on the other hand after potentially consecutive mediocre seasons I'm not sure that top recruits will have as much love for the program. In a perfect world UM would have enough money to retain Stitt as an offensive coordinator and possibly recruiting head and hire a head coach who has the capacity to manage all phases of the game. I don't see that happening.

Too much hand wringing. Give Jensen more experience; recruit and/or develop the secondary, and we're moving up. The defense looked better in the 2nd half at Weber. That whole first half was snake bit, and once the tone was set, the snake started to eat its own tail ... reverse momentum ... it happens.

The players and recruit's like Stitt and his program. If they dumped him, all the verbals so far would bail.

So. His recruiting is as overhyped as Big Dipper ice cream.

Pflu was building a great program. GD shame.
And yet the guy he picked to coach and recruit his O-Lines was the worst O-Line coach we’ve probably ever had.

I liked the guy a lot, but he wasn’t perfect.

Yes, either at UM or NAU.

Regarding your post responding to my list of 5, I agree with you. Was just giving 5 names, not 5 realistic names.

He had Bob Beers at the start. Beers was the OL coach of the Griz's greatest OL in the 90's. It went down when Beers left.

Good point. That’s fair.

1. Why do you think Regents would never approve? What would regents hold against him? I know a bunch of the regents, several quite well. Met with one last week for several hours, just to shoot the breeze. Have worked with one for 35 years. I don't see anyone on the regents being a big problem. They all know how bad of a president Engstrom was, and how many bad decisions he made.

2. Don't agree on TG. If Stitt and coaches are gone, and Haslam goes, who would hold anything against him? He still has lots of supporters and friends at the top of Griz Nation.

4. Based on being a good coach with a lot of Griz history and contacts. Recruiting.

5. Why? I think Choate would be terrific if Stitt were not here.

Perhaps, but the question wasn't who would be a candidate and have a realistic chance of being selected. It was "please list 5 candidates for the position".
