The mousers' Taco Dowler separated his shoulder yesterday in practice. His father claims he's out for the upcoming season and will use his redshirt.

That’s unfortunate. Hope he heals up well. Unless there is other structural damage, I think he could be ready for the fall.

That's a tough injury to rehab. A knee is a hinge that goes on a single plane (hopefully) back and forth. The shoulder goes in almost 360 degrees while the arm rotaes thumbs up or thumbs down and everything in between. He's a gifted player. There's no need to rush things. I wish him the best 364 days a year. ;)

As a guy rehabbing a dislocated shoulder, can confirm.

I've rehabbed my right one twice and my left one once. Plus I had both knees replaced. I've had 23 surgeries total. I played for the Griz in the 70's and graduated with only minor injuries. A lot of people ask me if I regrated playing football. I tell them hell no I'd play again in a heart beat if I was young, fit and in one piece. Great memories of being a Griz. Plus the older I get the better I was. Strange how that is. One of my shoulder injuries was when I hit a deer on a bicycle. That hurt.

Good shit, Mich.

If out for fall, he must need surgery. Separations are graded in degrees. Must don’t require surgery. Even a bad one usually heals in 6 weeks or so. I have had a dozen separations of varying degrees, none requiring surgery. The ligaments holding the AC joint together, get stretched or torn. The AC joint is not a true joint.

hoops is right, for the most part. although the AC joint is definitely a joint with ligaments, cartilage, synovial fluid, like all joints. it just doesn't move a whole lot, like a ball and socket joint, for example.

it's important to know that a separated shoulder and a dislocated shoulder are two very different things. I am shocked that a separated shoulder this far away from the season would keep him out of next season. that seems odd. as hoops said, 6 weeks or less is usually about the time frame for it to heal (although some never "heal" in their original position) to the point you can resume activity. very common injury with football players, mountain bikers, motocross, and bulldoggers.

Since I do sports medicine, I can confirm the above 2 posts. There are bad AC separations with associated dislocations plus fracture that need surgery, but likely would be available by fall. Will be interesting to see what the details are.

I'm not Uptop. He said to tell you hello, knowing how you are such a knowledgeable football fan.

Knowledgeable enough to know we couldn’t have gotten Taco and #2 that you aren’t fooling anyone Uptop.

If he dislocated and is apparently out for the year, I would look more at labrum/cuff tear. Dislocation by itself without collateral damage could potentially heal sooner depending on capsular damage. If he tore the labrum or rotator cuff, it is definitely 9-12 months for an elite athlete who is getting that shoulder banged on. My money is on labrum. It is super important to protect the repair for months even before you can lift again.
