sympathy for the devil?

that's what i'm feeling tonight for weber state, our devil rival forever in basketball. they've garnered a lot of respect over the years for our conference, beating north carolina in the ncaa's while always pestering their larger in-state rivals in a basketball-mad state. when it comes to big sky sports facilities, the purple palace stands out like the taj mahal in a slum. coaching, randy rahe continues a great line that began back in the 60's with dick motta.

and yet tonight this proud program was humiliated, again, a total second half collapse against their hated rival in the most important of games, the big sky tournament. you could dismiss last year as a great performance by one rival player, but to falter so badly again in such a critical game is humiliating, deflating the entire program and unquestionably tarnishing rahe's reputation as a coach. of course, they'll be back when lillard is back, and they'll be our most formidable opponent for years to come. but love hate? tonight my heart goes out to them, just a little.

You know LA, I can be negative too at times. Hell, I was plenty in the first half of this game. But give the "everything sucks shit" routine a rest once in awhile. No one forces you to watch Griz basketball.

I'm not always happy with their play either. I'm not happy with the conference most of the time. Goodness knows I'm not happy with the officiating, but F*ck, just enjoy the win for once and get ready for another big game tomorrow, how 'bout?

Their coach, in the post-game interview attributed their collapse to bad fatigue at about the 10 minute mark of the second half. How important is that first round bye and 10 days rest at the end of a long regular season?

Go Griz!

Maul the plain old bears!

Coach Rahe is a good coach and is very popular with Weber fans. But I have some serious questions after losing in the semis the past three years, including twice at home. And the last two years have been epic collapses. Of course we all remember AJ last year, and this year Weber doesn't score a single point in the last 7 minutes and 45 seconds of the game, including 15 straight missed shots, and shoots 21% for the game. Very frustrating.

Cats are Cats

That's funny. But I thought that was classy of Tinkle to tip his hat to Rahe and the Cats in the post-game interview.

One would think that Rahe would have extended a compliment to UM for the outstanding Defense the Griz played, and the fact we OWNED Weber on the boards. Maybe Randy was too tired.

Good thread!

Bout all those 'cats?' -- I can respect them, and I usually do. But I don't have to feel sorry for them.

The thing about good defense is that it makes a good offense look bad. Credit the better D for last night's win. WSU got no open looks. Anywhere.

That's what was so encouraging about last night's win. The Griz solved the Cats' D, and when Will Cherry started attacking WSU's perimeter hedging D by driving to the bucket, everything started opening up.

Montana's D was just ridiculous last night. I actually thought Weber's defense was sensational, but Montana's was head and shoulders above that, even.

Last year, the Griz outscored Weber by 21 in the 2nd half. This year they outscored them by 27 in the 2nd half. That is some seriously bad Weber juju right there.

What year was that, AWF?

I believe it was the 82-83 season, but correct me if I'm wrong, AWF.

Incidentally, there were some TERRIFIC players in the BSC that year:

Brian Kellerman, Derrick Pope, Ken Green, Kelvin Smith, Edwards, et al.

sorry to offend you, but I do not see watching the worst basketball half I have ever seen followed by a repeat of the first but roles switched, as anything pride worthy. As for officiating, blaming officials for jr high level of play is just a a passive aggressive outlet to vent your frustrations. I have "enjoyed" more wins and even losses by UM than you might think...this might be a win, but is not something to be proud of....hopefully, tonight, UM can reach down and grab some of the productive aggressiveness they showed against some teams this year and past...obviously, the odds makers are even more negative than I since UM is a decided underdog....one good thing to know is that nearly every loss this year for the Griz has been to teams the oddsmakers in LV and elsewhere thought would fall to Montana. Maybe, that will hold true here...Selvig has to have his head into the game, and that is the key....We know what Cherry and Qvale can do, and Kareem, as far as I am concerned, can be more effective on offense than Stockton...Defense, hmmm...
