The Utah Blaze announced the resignation of head coach/GM Danny White today. I first heard it during the CLE-ORL playoff game on ESPN2 tonight. The Blaze website verified it.

From the tone of the article, it sounds like this resignation caught the team by surprise. Sure, the first few years of the franchise have been a struggle, culminating in an 0-9 start this year, but the Blaze made the playoffs each year, including a furious push this year to clinch the 4 seed in the American Conference after said 0-9 start (starting QB Joe Germaine missed part of the season with an injury).

The Hall-of-Famer claimed the need for a break after this season in particular. I can understand that, but I'm wondering if there's something else in the works. The three straight one-and-outs in the playoffs MAY have factored into the decision, but certainly I don't think that the resignation was ASKED for.

Is White next in line at Arizona State? How about Dallas? He's way too young to be done. A sabbatical perhaps, but he just CAN'T be done yet.

How about in Dallas???

The Cowboys have Super Bowl aspirations so Danny White would not be a good choice...unless he is working on the opposing sideline-

What the cr@p are you talking about? White earned a Super Bowl ring as a player AND two Arena Bowl rings as a coach. What makes you believe that he can't win a Super Bowl when he ALREADY HAS?

LET IT GO!!!!!! :crybaby:

Amazing how many forget that. The one mistake Tom Landry ever made was removing the punting duties from White, though the move was sort of understandable given the fact that the "experiment" with Rafael Septien "punting" with the side of his foot a la place-kicking after White was knocked out of the Redskin playoff game was horrendous at best. White was hired out of the old WFL after ignoramus Mitch Hoopes had punts blocked in two straight Super Bowls. White was at or near the top of the league in gross and net punting average every year he punted, which is amazing given the presence of Ray Guy, the only pure punter ever taken in the first round, in Oakland.

Amazing that a guy so successful at punting became one of the best coaches ever in a league that doesn't allow punting.

;-)

Of course, I'm stuck in the '80s when it comes to sports in general and the Cowboys in particular. Not only would I have White return as QB/P and HC, but I'd replace TO with Drew Pearson and Tony Hill and the RB with Tony Dorsett in a heartbeat.

How can you defend a QB whose last two playoff appearances included first round losses to the Rams in which he threw a total of 6 interceptions? A playoff career in which he went a pedestrian 5-5 overall with 14 TDs and 14 INTs.

As far as QBs go, White was a hell of a punter-unless you consider the actual stats. As for 2nd best to Ray Guy, well, consider that Guy had a career punting average of 42.4 yds per punt and belongs in the Hall of Fame, and the BEST season for Danny White was less than that at 41.7. Of course, he wasn't even the best punter in the NFC East, a title best given to Dave Jennings of the Giants who was better than White in Gross Average every single season from 1977-1983...

Danny White would have been a better replacement for Roger Rabbit rather than Roger Staubach...

Maybe he would be a good coach...although this statement from Wipikedia should concern those looking to hire him to win the big game: "White's contract was not renewed by the new Rattlers ownership after the 2004 season following three consecutive ArenaBowl losses."

Ouch!

Are you an Arizona State guy?

That would explain the infatuation...so I'll jump off your back-

What is the AFL?

And this from a guy who'll take an arrogant selfish SOB over someone TRULY good like Johnson or Jabbar.

The other anti-Danny White posters on this thread at least had something resembling substantive arguments. I guess I should expect not to get same from Swilly.
