Sun Missoulian tells Ugly facts of BSC basketball

Rial Cummings noted how far the conference has fallen in RPI ratings and prestige. He suggests that PSU offers the only hope for a BSC men's champion to escape a play-in again. He says only the SWAC down south is rated lower. How far can you fall once you've reached the basement? Gonzaga got it right fortheir program.

Yeah, Gonzaga got it right when they dropped their football program and concentrated on b-ball. They also got it right when they hired a "good old boy" assistant. Mark Few has stayed at Gonzaga despite offers at bigger programs and built the program into what it is today.

:o :o It is nice that you 2 fall sports types could join this thread to provide your undieing support to the basketball program. In any case Montana played 7 regular season conference games and 1 tournament game in Missoula this year. It was some pretty competitive and exciting basketball. I assume you and Rial were not availiable to observe the games. Montana was a few thousand short of a home court on Sat. Next Thursday and Friday be sure to add your support as Rial explains to us that the Big Sky Tournament winner will not beat the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Portland State can play. They can not beat Montana everytime but Sacramento State has already been illiminated from the tournament and they have some players. Do not spend a lot of time trying to win a game in the big dance. Santa Clara beat North Carolina and they can not dance. It might interest you to know that a basketball team from UT Chattanooga has qualified for the NCAA. :o :o

What the Griz were short of was about 4,000 fans when 7,200 seat Dahlberg Arena drew 3,311 fans to watch them dispatch EWU. "....short of a home court."? I have no idea what that means. They're playing the BSC championships in Portland because PSU won the regular season, certainly not because of their pathetic crowds in the garage size Stotts Center. Even us fall types know that.

Silvertip I am your No. 1 supporter for your plan to move up for the Football because Missoula people are similar to all people and they like to win. Many fear and do not understand competition. Example that same night the building was full enough for a regular season night game wbb because their was no fear of losing. A good plan would be to move the football program up and empty the stadium late in the season when it gets cold and this would increase basketball attendance and home court advantage. Then in the good years Montana would move up to the 14th or 15th seed. For now 16 seed can be a good deal if you win 1 game and assume the No 1 position.

Montana and Portland State would avoid the play-in game, as their RPI's are 175 and 160 respectively. The best SWAC team is at 225 and in the NEC, Monmouth (163) lost out, leaving Fairleigh Dickinson (176).

Weber and Montana State are both 225 or lower.

If a couple of other upsets come through (see Detroit in the Horizon, Rider in the MAAC, etc.) PSU and UM may even move up to a 15 seed. Montana played a non-conf SOS of 85, which is very respectable and may give them an edge over some of the other teams in the 14-16 range. The committee would see that as good experience that makes them less awe-struck and give them a better chance of getting an upset. Montana would be 18-12 if they got the bid, which is a pretty good record.

BTW, PSU's non-conf SOS is 290. Pathetic.

Given time I believe that Larry can build a good program. I do agree that
about half of the Big Sky is pretty sad. There is no reason that Montana
cannot have a first rate program. The Univ is good, the town is good, it just takes a winning attitude. One problem I see with Dahlberg-the students are relegated to the cheap seats. Someone should work on putting togethersomething like the "GU's Kennel club".

I agree with you ballhog, part of what makes USU's Spectrum so itimidating for opposing teams is that the students are right in the middle of the arena. UM needs to get back to that.

A couple games tonight that could shuffle the Big Sky bid up to a 15 seed perhaps.

Oakland (211) faces Oral Roberts for the Mid-Continent bid. That game is on ESPN2 right now.

Detroit (188) plays Wisconsin-Milwaukee for the Horizon bid. That game is at 7:00pm on ESPN.

PSU and UM would get a higher seed than Oakland and Detroit, so I'm rooting for those two to pull off the upset.

WSU (240) and MSU (257) have no hopes of avoiding the play-in game.

It looks like Oakland pulled out the upset 61-60, hitting a 3-pointer with 1 second left. Talk about March Madness, eh?

Alright Detroit, your turn.

Damn you Detroit! They don't get a basket in the last 2:39 and missed 2 FTs that would have pretty much sealed the deal.

Wisconsin-Milwaukee wins 59-58. Dang, Detroit would have made 4 teams that would have been lower than the BSC bid. As of now, BSC is still probably a 16 seed...no play-in game though.
