Is there any financial benefit for Idaho staying in the FBS as an independent over dropping down to the Big Sky besides the hope that they would land in another conference eventually? I don't see any other FBS conference having interest in Idaho.

bigger guarantees in body bag games....there is much more money being a FBS punching bag.....

dabox is right, as an FBS independent they'd make more money when they get paid to play on the road.

However... the downside is they'd have hell finding enough teams to travel to Moscow to have many home games. They'd never get a quality program in there. They could get some of the bottom feeders to come up but at a cost. They'd either have to give a home & home deal (which eliminates a future body bag large payout), or pay dearly to the bottom feeder opponent to pay them to come north.

I won't be shocked if Idaho chooses to try to go the Independent route again because of pride. Yet the writing is on the wall, they really need to rejoin the Big Sky.

Clearly the writing has been on the wall for several years...Idaho either cant read or is delusional or both.

The latest I've seen from Idaho fans is that FCS is not monetarily viable for ANYONE, so we will all be dropping football soon, and there's no exposure at the FCS level... even though UM has DOUBLE the players in the NFL than Idaho has... and if they have to come back to FCS they should just drop football all together, because coming back to FCS is a fate worse than death...

Then, so be it.

The Griz need to chart their own course in this puzzle. Idaho joining presents another potential shackle to future plans - by association and the perception of that association. We are already shackled by the cats.

All rivalries would stay intact every year.
No; Idaho should replace EWU as a Montana rival. 84 games going back to 1903 with the Little Brown Stein. It was a far bigger rivalry than UM/MSU. I would suspect Idaho would stipulate that in the deal since there would be a financial advantage. Then EWU would have Idaho and PSU.

Why not take EWU and Idaho as Montana's rivalry games and let the Griz and MSU pencil in their game every year like MSU and Eastern do now? The MSU game will take care of itself. It doesn't need big sky conference help.
I think we would want the MSU (and Idaho) games to be conf. games. I suspect the rivalry deal would go out the window if the BSC went to 14 teams. Two divisions, play six games in division, two out. Or move to 9 conf. games which would allow 3 out of division. Still impossible to arrive at a real conf. champion, as it is now.

Last years news!

At first I was a fan of UI coming back to the BSC. After reading their board f&%$ them I hope the Big Sky pulls the invite.I can not believe fans of such a terrible team could be so cocky. When Msu goes to Moscow this year I hope they put 70 on them. They actually think people will think less of them if they drop down hell most people don't know Idaho has a team.

Nationally people will. And believe it or not more people know who Idaho is than almost all members of the FCS.

They might be "known," but for all the wrong reasons. They are a shackle to the Griz.

Thanks bg
My favorite line - "Facts are stubborn things and I adamantly believe that these 2 schools moving their football programs to a lower level, while maintaining Division I status in all of their other sports, will do more to elevate these moribund football programs than being a bottom feeder at the 1-A level. "

At 55-27-2 vs. Montana; I guess that does represent a "shackle" to the Griz. Google Jerry Kramer and Wayne Walker.

You don't think UI in the Big Sky...right now...shackles the Griz going forward?

I do believe UI becomes very competitive in the Big Sky very quickly...but this UI "move down" is NOT good for the Griz IMO.

That is a "$2 dollar whore" the movie was set in the late 19th century - presumably at the the time the trans continental railroad, which was completed in 1869. For $20 dollars back then you could buy an entire whorehouse.

No way. No benefit to it. They'll wait for the MWC offer.

Is MWC that much better than Sunbelt? The way things are going, it'll only make sense to go FBS if you're in one of the major conferences.

MW has a much more lucrative TV contract and better bowl tie-ins.

For now. With cord cutting going on, I expect the days of the mega TV deals all but done with ESPiN, Fox, NBC, etc. for all but the Power 5 (and possibly down to Power 4).

ESPN announced they are laying off hundreds in downsizing move. Indeed. NCAA created FCS just for this reason. Welcome to the brave New World of the NCAA/NFL farm system.

People keep saying this big shift is coming for college football. I used to believe it. But they have been saying it as long as I've been on egriz. I now believe we have already seen it. Sure, the BCS will continue to tinker with the playoff system, but I don't think the power 5 are going to break off to start their own thing. Why would they when the NCAA keeps giving them most of what they want?

Also, let's not forget basketball. Football is the big revenue sport, but most programs still manage to spend more than they take in. However, -- as I recall, and this may have changed -- lots more programs actually make a "profit" on their men's BBall program.

Au contraire!

Hedley Lamarr: My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Taggart: God darnit, Mr. Lamarr, you use your tongue prettier than a twenty dollar whore.
