Stuffing the run

In addition to the awesome special teams play, I think finding a way to stuff the run, especially on first down, really put SEMO where they didn’t want to be, which is passing the ball. They really are not good at it. The receivers didn’t run hot routes to help their QB out when he was being pressured and the QB was way too willing to throw to receivers who weren’t looking. It is a wonder there wasn’t about 5 more interceptions.

It truly was remarkable. DeLaurent is extremely talented and a tough dude (albeit an asshole). But the law of averages says that if he threw 10 more of those 8 of them would be picked.

They had a ton of really amazing circus catches last night, and there were a few where the throws weren’t very good by the QB. Those 2 giant ass receivers are outstanding players. Idk if either of them have any eligibility left, but if they decided to enter the portal, I would take both of them!

reminded me of EWU of old, have them dead to right and still manage to get out of a third and long situation

When the opponent has a running back who tops 100 yards, you assume that they must have run the ball okay, at least. And 122 yards on 30 carries, 4.1 yards per carry for Geno Hess … seems not bad. But dig a little deeper and you find out just how well the Griz run defense did.

For perspective, keep in mind that Hess is a stud: Over 4,000 yards rushing for his career (he’s a senior) with 53 touchdowns. This year, he had 1,691 yards, with a 7.1 average yards per carry. Last week, he put up 317 yards, and 198 the week before that. Despite being FCS-(small school), he is the #55 running back on a typical NFL draft board.

Hess built those stats with a lot of carries, punctuated by some major breakaways (often 70 or 80 yards). Against the Griz, Hess had just three carries over 10 yards (10, 11, 19). Take those out of his total and you get 82 yards on 27 carries … for an average of just a hair over 3 yards per carry. No wonder the SEMo quarterback ended up attempting 49 passes (versus 39 rushes)!

No so fast there cowboy. He racked up those yards against bad teams. Any back rushing for over a 100 yards and two td's had an outstanding day at the office.

I absolutely agree with your premise ... but you missed my point (poorly expressed, apparently).

When I saw how well Hess had run, I had exactly your reaction ... "damn good day at the office." But the overall impression – shared by many on here and elsewhere – was that the Griz had "contained" the SEMo run game and forced them to pass.

How could this be? So I dug beneath the gross numbers. And two things jumped out. First, Hess was (essentially) their entire running game. The rest of the team (three guy, including the QB) gained just 20 yards on nine carries. Yes, Hess piled up a lot of yards ... because he was 44% of their offense (39 of 88 plays). When that much of your offense has only three gains over 10 yards per try, and otherwise gains only a hair over 3 yards per, you are forced to try something else.

Of course, the Griz running sucked even worse, but LJ took up the slack ... and Special Teams bailed them out.

I'll never understand the negativity of some people on this board. First of all, we won. Second of all, one of the premier FCS RB's was held to one of his worst outings this year, but because it was over 100 yds and he had 2 TD's, Griz D sucks. I can't wait til this weekend....we beat NDSU in 2015 and they piled up almost 250 yds rushing. By your metric, Griz D sucked....Jesus man, we won the fucking game!!! Quit being a stupid scat troll or negative nelly against the Griz and let's appreciate what happened and could happen going forward. You sound like Clark Griswold's father in law...."the little lights aren't blinking Clark". (not directed at you Ida, your stuff is amazing, just that whiney bitch indiancoyote).

The Griz D did suck in the first meeting in 2015 and fortunately our offensive bailed them out. That's why in the playoffs we got our asses handed to us by them--The offense couldn't carry the defense anymore.

Orrrrr...........maybe their rush offense is that good, but we were able to contain them just enough to win. I'm continually amazed at people who believe we should be giving up no more than 70 yds rushing and 150 passing. We have a pretty damn good defense, including against the pass, and Incarnate Word would torch us. Guess what....bet we could still beat them cuz their defense is shit. At the end of the day, I'm good with winning moreso than having good defensive stats. Know who seems to care more about stats than winning? Our archaic coaching staff who would rather win with an ineffective backup cuz "statistically" or whatever he's better, than maybe just playing someone different to just try and win, regardless of how it looks on paper.

When you played them in 2015, wasn't that their first game of the season? Anything can happen in first games. Do you think the Griz would have beaten them at the end of that season?

Oh good, a scat troll coming over to completely miss the point of my post. Point-being is we beat them and they had a shit-ton of rushing yards....ie, you don't need to completely stop their run to win, just score more points. It was also calling out an alleged Griz fan, albeit probably Intuitive Griz or a scat troll with a new moniker just to be that guy, about how rushing D means jack when only looking at yards given up.

Do you think you would have beaten eastern without the officials gifting you the game? Or Weber without 2,789 long snap yardage by Weber?

If I am correct NDSU was a much better team by the end of the 2015 season and won their 5th NC beating Jacksonville State. As far as the Cats and the EWU game and Weber game, yes they could of lost but that is the way way the game evolved and they won. We will see with Weber on Saturday who is the better team.

They ran the ball better in that first game (5.1 ypc) than they did the 2nd game (4.1 ypc). The difference was turnovers (-1 vs. -4) which killed our offense. Gustafson was great in the first game and awful in the playoffs. This led to the infamous Stitt twitter DM snafu where he tweeted to a potential recruit that his QB sucked.

Not entirely sure what a game 7 years ago has to do with the whether we can win this weekend, though.

Soooo, with the cats it's simply how the game evolved, but when the GRIZ are involved the other team is just better? Okay, I see. You're losing cat logic. "Should of" known.
