Student recruiting at MSU - not all roses

It's been this way for years, man. It's over the top right now, but I've felt this way every time I've been in Bozeman over the last 5 or so years.

I don't want it to be the case just as much as you, but it's just the truth.
Funny thing about this is we are this way now but it was only after trying to catch up to Missoula in those regards. You can literally find this exact topic on BN with the roles reversed about 15 years ago. We asked why Missoula seemed to live and breathe the Griz while Bozeman seemed to only care about the Cats a few hours on Saturday! We even talked about the signage downtown Missoula compared to the lack thereof in Bozeman.

This has been building here for a while now. Even before Choate but he and Waded seemed to really be the first with the vision. But in the end winning is all that matters. If we were constantly losing Montana kids to the griz and constantly losing on the field, that vision means nothing. Fans are fair weather. Right now the Cats are a “cool” thing in Bozeman. We ride it as long as we can and enjoy it just like you guys did. Because it doesn’t last forever.

I was almost going to say, Bozeman now feels a lot like Missoula did in the 2000's re: the energy for the school in the city.

Oh definitely, the scenarios used to be reversed. Waded, and your community, are to commended! Its fleeting, so enjoy it.

Fleeting, but also takes careful cultivation and continued good leadership and all levels, all of which.... aren't the case in missoula currently, and haven't been since the king George days and old guard city leadership.

I suppose everyone has their views and feelings about Bozeman, but I don't agree with hardy anything I read about Bozeman on egriz, especially from Griz fans. I am only in Bozeman about 5 times a year now, and always stop or stay there, but I also go just to Big Sky several more times. Until 2020, I went to Bozeman more. 10 or so years ago, I was going over 10 times a year. My family has lived there since the 60's. I'm not saying anyone is wrong or that I am right, just that I don't get most of the comments on Bozeman. To me, Bozeman doesn't feel like Missoula now or ever. Quite different places.

Yeah, I'm talking specifically about the energy they have over there for MSU and the school. It just feels like the way Missoula felt in the 2000's, where the whole town just buzzed about the Griz.

I don't have any other flattering things to say about Bozeman compared to Missoula apart from that, though lol

And I guess I'll be totally transparent here, I spent practically 0 time in Bozeman before 2020, so I don't actually know much about what it was like before.

This is precisely what im saying and how I feel. I dont envy Bozeman in any way shape or form. (Aside from they do a great job hosting youth sports tournaments). But we're starting to do a better job in that regard, too!

Im only commenting on buzz and community support and cooperation that is obviously happening in bozeman at a much more engaged manner than in missoula, currently.

I ran into a neighbor on my walk this morning, whose son used to go to MSU. I asked him where his scat flag was and this started a long conversation about MSU and Bozoland. Suffice it to say, it's not all roses over at MSU. My neighbor's son went his freshman year and didn't go back for his sophomore year. He didn't like the MSU dorm life and, outside of the outdoorsy activities, there's nothing to do in Bozoland. He liked being close to Yellowstone but he didn't like to be outdoors as much as he thought he would. He also thought the football players were cocky and arrogant. He said the MSU recruiter over-promised and MSU under-delivered. My neighbor said that's what they've been hearing from many of the MSU Minnesota connections they have. So it seems like MSU gets a ton of kids the first year and they don't return their sophomore year.
I'm shocked. Shocked! You're saying that a kid who couldn't hack it at a college blamed somebody other than himself for that? This is precious.
