If you’re using self defense in a fight, why would you run when the cops show up? Doesn’t that defeat the whole point of defending one’s self?

So for those folks pointing out the witness's statement that the injured WSU athlete's head was injured when it hit the ground after the first punch, it's probably irrelevant, at least with regard to Strong's culpability for the injury, for two reasons. 1) Strong's first punch was assumedly the proximate cause of the other guy's skull hitting the ground, and 2) Strong allegedly hit the guy at least one more time after he was on the ground. I just wouldn't expect Strong to catch a break on the severity of his punishment if he's charged and found guilty for assault, since a skull injury like this would be argued to be a foreseeable potential outcome resulting from a head punch delivered by a powerful athlete. Having said that, it's why these things take time to gather facts, and ultimately get argued in a courtroom, with sometimes unexpected outcomes, depending on facts and the skill of the attorneys involved to argue their client's perspective.

And no, I'm not an attorney, but I stayed recently at a Holiday Inn Express.

I already commented on the second punch. Pay attention.

So, do you think Strong got down on his knees and hit an unconscious guy lying on the roadway? Or, if Strong just so flexible that he can thrown a punch standing up against a guy with his head on the ground? Or how to you think the second punch was thrown? Just curious.

I want to see what the other 2 witnesses say. Not saying Strong isn't in the soup, but there is more information to come.

I think the second punch was thrown after chasing him down from a house party at 2am while the guy was already on the ground. Pay attention.

What any of us think about that second punch matters not at all. What matters is what the witnesses are willing to testify about regarding the second punch, and the story of some witnesses is not publicly known at this time. I'll pay attention to them after they speak.

You’re all a bunch of god damn lawyers arguing over the million possibilities for a trial which may or may not occur in a year or so. This is a FB board and all we really care about is whether he’ll start/play or not. We’ll never agree on a decision from 12 random jackasses who are too dumb to avoid jury duty. But we can all (I’m sure except for one) agree that he should not play this week, so why isn’t Stitt holding a huge presser 75 style to announce it? (Kidding not kidding, sorta).

If that's the point you want to make, you should have said so. Strong obviously should not play because he was involved in a fight, was arrested, and the other guy is in the hospital with a fractured skull.

Back to the point you apparently were to trying to make before, some people like pontificate until challenged with a broader perspective, and some people like to bitch about lawyers until they need one. You might fall into either or both categories, but it really isn't that important.

Simply put, we need more facts before anyone can reasonably assess criminal responsibility. I for one am done at least until more facts come to light. And, by the way, what really happened in Pullman over the weekend is a helluva a lot more important than who will be starting for the Griz against Weber State.

The affidavit is kind of damning. Whitnesses and a confession. At the very best, Strong is going to be off the team. It saddens me to see a young life (possibly two) ruined over a house party fight. It’s stupid. If Strong is charged and convicted, he will never lead a normal life. He will have a felony on his record. Worse, a violent felony. Most employers will not hire him for anything. Not to mention he would be expelled. Most colleges have trouble having violent felons as students. If this sticks... it’s a true tragedy. Another wasted young life.

It isn't really a confession. As I said earlier, what Strong "confessed" to will be trumped if he and his witnesses have a strong recollection of the self-defense elements.

I know this didn't occur, but if the WSU guy swung first, and Strong then decked him with one punch, and the guy fractured his skull when he hit the roadway, then there's no assault of any degree for Strong.

At the end of the day, the most important fact is not why Strong was chasing him. It was what occurred in the time/seconds before the punch. If the guy was just standing there with hands down saying please don't hit me, and not being threatening, then the facts are bad for Strong.

While this didn't happen, if Strong chased the guy, and the guy stopped and started to pull a gun, and Strong punched him, would any of you be doubting self-defense.

I'm not saying Strong is in a good position based on what we know so far, but it will be important to get all the facts, and hear what all of the witnesses say.

I agree completely, if after being chased WSU turned and pulled a gun and shot Strong, I would say that WSU did it in self defense and let him walk.

It doesnt matter if the kid deserved it....it doesnt matter what the court says..or who can prove what...

People run all the time in situations like this. Jimmy Wilson was found not guilty essential for self defense reasons, and he left the scene. Maybe the guys were worried that a bunch of WSU guys would come after them. Maybe the guys were worried that the incident, even with no charges, would result in them being suspended from playing the next weekend. Maybe it was because people of color are used to not being treated fairly by the police, don't trust the police, and wanted to avoid that. Maybe they just didn't think. I agree that people and prosecutors would use the flight thing as you have, but it's not hard to counteract it, in my experience.

Personally, I don't think flight and self-defense have much to do with each other. I don't recall being in or around many bar fights when those involved and their friends didn't leave the bar, whether they were culpable or not. Who wants to deal with the bar owners and staff, or the cops, in that situation.

I agree Strong has a problem, but he did not admit to those things. He certainly didn't admit to chasing the guy down. He said he calmed down and then saw that guy as he was going back to the party. He didn't say he whooped the guy. He admitted that he hit him twice.
