Montana and Dayton - If it's game day, then it's time for Montana and Dayton to score some points. Montana hasn't been shut out in 397 straight games since 1989 - the longest run in FCS history as they head into a matchup with Idaho State. Dayton holds the all-division record of 479 since 1976, including 285 straight since moving to the FCS in 1993, and it has everything intention of scoring against Jacksonville.

Unless a major blizzard moves in, the Griz streak is surely going to continue. Strange that this hasn't come up already (near as I can tell) ... guess that's another thing Griz fans kinda take for granted.

Great find. I didn’t realize it had been that long. Glad that FG was good against the Ducks a few weeks ago! Griz will definitely make it 398 on Saturday!

OMG!

Had not even thought about that FG. Obviously, the streak also includes all the other money ("play-up") games the Griz have had over all those years. Absolutely amazing.

FYI: Wondered about that last shutout, so I went to Wikipedia. 1988, at Portland State (then D-II), when Pokey Allen was their coach. If you're going to lose, and get shut out, you might as well lose to a legend.

Agreed! Pokey was a hell of a coach. It’d be interesting to go back and see how many close calls there have been during that streak.

Close Calls During “The Streak” (of Non-Shutouts)

Ask and ye shall have ... (thanks to an amazing resource I found).

For those who are a bit weak on Griz history, the streak began about three years into the Don Read era. In thirty years of FCS games, the Griz have had just nine close calls … defining a close call as scoring a touchdown or less.

1988 0-21 PSU The last shutout

Code:
1990	3-41	BSU
1991	3-31	McNeese
1992	7-24	Weber State
1998	7-21	CSU Northridge
2002	7-10	Montana State
2005	6-16	Montana State
2008	7-24	Richmond (national championship)
2012	7-16	Montana State
2015	6-37	NDSU (playoff game)
Using the same criteria, the Griz have also had only three close calls against FBS opponents (out of 16 games, if my count is right). FYI: Since 1990, the Griz have twice won at Oregon State, 1990 and 1996. Of course, that was no great accomplishment since O-State went 1-10 in 1990 and 2-9 in 1996. Anyway, the FBS close calls were:
Code:
2006	7-41	Iowa
2017	7-63	Washington
2019	3-35	Oregon
That amazing resource I referred to above: A complete coaching history for the Montana Grizzlies, all the way back to 1897. It not only has a brief biography of each coach, but it has a complete list of every game, with scores. I’m not sure I would have tackled this little project had I not found that. The link to the PDF download page at GoGriz.com is: https://gogriz.com/documents/2019/7/26/Scoring_Coaching_History_2019.pdf

This made me very curious so I went to the linked record and started counting shut-outs …
wins – losses – ties.

If I didn’t mess up the counting …
118 wining shut-outs
109 shut-out losses
14 0-0 tie games

Go Griz!

Cool Thanks! For some reason that Cal State Northridge game sticks in my memory.

Whew! Barely got that 398’th game without a shutout! :x
