Strait: Is this right???

In today's Missoulian article about the Silver-Maroon scrimmage, they say that Strait has put on 40 pounds since last season!!! I know he was a bit undersized bulk-wise last year, but 40 pounds is a hell of a lot of weight for bballer to put on in one offseason. For any of you that went to the scrimmage, is this true??

I posted this on Bobcat nation along the same line.

The Griz scrimaged last night, and there is a report in the Missoulain (see below) Please note the side issue about Strait being 40lbs heavier. Forget the "how did he put the weight on" issue for a second. I would like to know how healthy it is for a man of 6-8 to put that much weight on durring the off season. I had heard Strait was maybe 25 lbs heavier but 40 lbs . Makes you wonder if he is a clam fart away from a stress fracture, foot/ankle injury or ACL blow out. Every thing that I have read says you can not put that much weight on a super tall (6-6 plus) young man that quickly and not expect problems, especially one that is running and jumping at a college basketball level. All I have to say is that if I was playing the Griz tomorrow I would make them run and run and run and make their big men (the few they have left) prove they can keep up with me.

Despite my Bobcat slant, I still question 40 lbs!!! That seems like too much weight for one off season. Can all the bones, connective tissue, stamina handle that much weight that quickly for 35 minutes a game for a full season?

Depends which Missoulian article you read. One of them has it at 30 pounds, must have lost 10 during the scrimmage.

The write-up by Dave Guffey on www.montanagrizzlies.com states the increase in weight was 25 pounds.

I believe The Missoulian article (not the online version) has it 30 pounds and that Strait has had some problems with shin splints already.

Bill Schwanke has really exagerated the weight increase in the on-line Missoulian article.

Can anybody who was at the scrimmage attest to how he has bulked up?? Does he look good, like he has put on some good muscle or is it pudge???

Wasn't any pudge that I have seen.

Strait worked out 2 hours a day after work during the offseason. Hopefully, he didn't take any steroids.

It looked like all muscle to me. He is a physical force inside, that's for sure. He has a nice jump hook and looks fully ready to play the 5 position.

He's floating right under 250lbs. It's good weight too. Like Krysko said in the article in the Missoulian today, he's had shin splints from the extra weight and still isn't quite in shape yet.

During last nights telecast of the game between Miami/Orlando - they commented that Shauq felt his weight was to light last season and bulked up (thought they said to 350lbs) for this season. Comment was made that management didn't have a problem with his increased weight as long as his body fat count didn't increase from last year, which it has not. So stronger/healthier muscles = more durablility.

His brother is an expert on weight training-try 25-30lbs. expect big things.
he had a geat game against Dwight Howard's team in AAU.

He has put on some weight, but not noticeably more than you would expect between freshman and sophomore years. This whole topic is not worth the time.
