I really think that Stitt got in his own way of success. His system was designed to go for it on fourth down almost all the time and not to put much emphasis in the run game. His biggest win against NDSU he did exactly that. Then he had a couple of losses and listened to the people saying you have to run the ball more in your offense and you have to stop going for it on 4th down. As a result he did not stay true to the roots of his own scheme and it let him down. I mean he ran the ball three times in a row on first and goal from the 9 yard line against MSU. That is not what a passing offense does. Just my two cents.
