Our defense has nowhere to go but up. It can't get much worse

"We're excited about having Jason run our defense. He's one of the best defensive minds I've ever been around," said Coach Stitt of his new DC.
"He hasn't been in the business a ton of years, but his knowledge is way beyond his years. He had a huge influence on our defense this past year, especially in the second half of the season."
This quote seems to back up the fact that Stitt was done with Ty and let Semore take over the reins in the second half of the season. Many seemed to dismiss that claim, but after reading this I'd say it's exactly what happened.
Here are the yards allowed up to the PSU game and post-PSU game:
Defensive Yards Allowed:
NDSU - 427 (Great game. Offenses traded blows. Griz D got big stops in the 4th.)
CP - 386 (Poly had 330 yards rushing but the big story was turnovers in this one.)
Liberty - 370 (A trick play touchdown got the Liberty offense on the board but overall, the Griz D played well in this game)
NAU - 266 (An impressive performance in this one.)
UC Davis - 339 (Held UC Davis to 13 points)
Weber State - 345 (All Griz fans know why this one was lost)
UND - 380 (Gave up a few big plays in the first half but battened down the hatches after)
PSU - 460 (PSU dual-threat QB Kuresa gashed them all day)
Average: 370 per game
ISU - 386 (ISU surprisingly had success in this one with a true freshman QB.)
EWU - 415 (EWU moved the ball but did not convert in big situations)
MSU - 503 (Great first half, let the Cats back in it in the second half)
SDSU - 343 (Griz D played a good game)
NDSU - 316 (Two interception TDs and one kickoff return for a TD. NDSU had 250 yards rushing.)
Average: 392 per game
Not trying to start any narratives or do a "Gregorak was the problem" argument. I just thought I would provide these stats for you guys to look at. Like what was said on the other thread, don't always take stats at face value.
Pretty hard to go from stats alone, the last 3 teams in the conference had 3 of the best offenses,(I don't have enough time to look it up, but 3 of the very best teams in the conference from a stats perspective, which doesn't tell the whole story) especially EWU and MSU, and then two of the best teams in all of FCS in the playoffs. If you watched the games, there was a big difference in how they played. No doubt in my mind we were a way better defensive team after the PSU game, and you could tell by the players body language they believed also.
Before one of the regular trolls jump in, you got any stats to back that up?

billingsgriz said:Our DC Jason Semore sounds like a young, go -getter, and while he doesn't have Ty's experience, for a young guy, he has quite a bit, having already had jobs, including DC, at his alma mater Adams State, as well as Oklahoma State, CSM, and now, UM.
I am excited to see how his defense performs at the beginning of the 2016 season and how it progresses throughout the season !!!
Inspector Griz said:I was mostly happy with our D all year. I was a bit more happy even in the second half of the season especially when those teams had offenses that could move the ball. Couple that with our inconsistent offense and our D on the field a ton. I felt our D kept us in games. Now if that was all Ty or Ty and Semore of more Semire in the second half of the season who knows. Next year shall tell a ton.
I bet it was hard for Ty at UM. Wanting to be the coach and getting passed up.. I am glad he stayed another year to ease even more transition.
I will add. Let's hope a guy like Selle or Shan can learn Stitts offense and has the skills to be a head coach. One of those guys being Montana guys might be a coach that wants to stick around a long time!

Agree selle could be an outstanding coach of the griz. Give it 10 years. One of the most cerebral and intelligent football minds I've ever been around. Mentor under a guy like stitt along with the eastern mt roots. He could be one of the great ones. I am just ecstatic about him and Shan being on staff. I know a lot of people were concerned with ohhhh stitt and his dudes are not montana guys. Well now they have two from some of our best years. Great hires

Forgot another one of the staff. Mike Ferriter also is from some of our best years and is coaching on this staff.

Reece Phillips commented on this and has coaching aspirations and was told by his coaches Montana has a reputation for hiring players from the program as coaches.

So too does MSU! Maybe more than UM. Last year, Ioane, Rider, Owens, Kempt were all former players on the coaching staff. Soooooo, be careful what you listen to. Nice he chose Um, but the coolaide goes down pretty easily.

That nothing nefarious went on. It was kind of looked at to be a mentorship role to Semore. That the plan was for him to gradually take over the D and then become the new DC this year? I wonder if there is something similar happening with the coaches retained by Choate. Is there some sort of agreement where they stay a year for that continuity but it is under the realization that it will be a year thing and then they will look elsewhere. Is that the reason for the switch from a D-line coach to a TE coach?
Since you guys are in the business of disparaging nicknames for our coaches, I think we ought to nickname Mr. Semore, Mr. Butts. Semore....Semore Butts. Yeah, not too original, but I like it.

I'd say it's far more likely that when Ty was retained he was told there are no guarantees beyond the first year.
