Will the Rams go after the next young, hot coordinator as they did with McElwain? When you do that, it’s a 50-50 proposition. About an equal number of those guys (men with no previous head coaching experience) flame out as make it.
... One name that needs to be in the mix is Colorado School of Mines head coach Bob Stitt. His name was floated as a candidate for the opening at Kansas when the school fired Charlie Weis during the season. Stitt is known as an offensive “guru” and has gained national recognition for his innovative offensive schemes from people like West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen, who credited Stitt with the invention of some of his key plays, including the “Jet” or “Fly” sweep.
... Stitt has been at Mines since 2000, opting to wait for the right opportunity before moving on. CSU, with its upward trend that should include a new stadium in the not-too-distant future, could represent that chance. Detractors think CSU is too big now to hire a coach from the Division II ranks. I would respectfully disagree. If you’re not a “Power 5” school, you’re not too big for anyone. There is no substitute for successful experience, and Stitt (and Wristen and others) have that.
... Can Stitt – or any of the others – continue to do what McElwain has done for CSU? There will be many enduring quotes from McElwain’s short tenure at CSU. My favorite might be one of his last. After the season-ending loss to Air Force, when McElwain chose to go for a fourth-and-two at the Air Force 42-yard line very late in the game and failed, leading to a last-second AFA game-winning field goal, McElwain was asked about the gamble.
... “You know me by now,” he told the media. “I’m not here to get a participation ribbon. We are going to try to win the ball game.” Let’s hope the next coach at CSU brings along that same outlook.

If the Rams want to be a program on the rise, then hire a coach on the rise. ... With apologies to recently fired Michigan coach Brady Hoke and Bob Stitt of Colorado Mines, it's not a bold move to hire a retread dismissed by Michigan or an offensive genius from a small college.

Kansas 3-9, 1-8. Last week: 9. Regular season complete. Bill Snyder endorsed Clint Bowen for the KU job, but Bowen stumbled to the finish line with two blowout losses after a strong start in his interim gig. If I'm AD Sheahon Zenger, Willie Fritz and Bob Stitt would be my top two candidates for the job, but don't rule out Bowen.

Anyway, after naming the initial first-blush replacements for Gary Andersen, we're going to a next tier. Of course, it's still early in this search, as day two is just getting underway. But let's go inside my head. Bring gorp.

If you're looking for a coach with whom academic standards aren't going to be an issue, why not go after an offensive mastermind who took over a Division II school that hadn't won since the Eisenhower administration and turned in a 15-season run where the Orediggers only finished under .500 twice? Bob Stitt's become a bit of a cult hero in coaching circles. He's built an offensive scheme that some of the modern innovators of college football have borrowed liberally from. He's also still only 50.
Oh, and the average ACT score for the Orediggers is 29. Admission questions? What admission questions?

Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl was mentioned by two of our three panelist-editors. Bohl might be the best possible choice for Nebraska if it wants someone with ties to the program.
I say this for every open job, but Bob Stitt from the Colorado School of Mines, because that's like having 2 and 3 off suit and being nutty enough to go in and then getting four of a kind on the river.
