STATS FCS Poll (Nov 14) – Griz #13

The Griz ended up right where I/we expected. The ranked teams that lost to ranked opponents mostly dropped about what I guessed. In fact, I do not see any real surprises (although a closer look may find some). The pollsters did, BTW, move UC Davis into the top-25. Also, Sac State got some new recognition with 7 first-place votes.

Can’t resist a little brag, followed by a failure admission that shows why I’m so cynical about this poll … even if it is the one we follow.

First, I did great on my guesses, with 13 on the nose, 8 within ±1, and 3 within ±2 … that’s 24 of 25.

My rules of thumb successfully dropped Rhode Island and Princeton. Then I correctly predicted who would move in (pretty easy, really). Then I made the (rash) assumption that the pollsters would do something sensible and slot UC Davis just ahead of the team they beat. Nope. They have Idaho tied at #21 (one ahead of my guess), but grudgingly nudged UCD in at #24. Now, I did state that putting UCD in higher was a WAG. But still. it was my worse miss. I should have known better.
