This is a good example of how where a tackle is made is more important than how many tackles were made.

Anyways, I didn’t say anything about getting tricked. I’m not even arguing that Robby is overrated. I just think people using tackles as a main statistic on whether a player is good or not is bad usage of a statistic. I’d love to see them categorize tackles in terms of distance from the LOS.

For example, player A has 10 tackles and player B has 10 tackles. If you just look at the box score, then they look like they had equal games. But player A had 7 tackles within 3 yards of the LOS, and player B had 1 tackle within 3 yards of the LOS. Both are valuable plays, but which player played better? Obviously A. I just think the tackle stat requires further context.

Also depends on whether the tackles were on designed pass plays or running plays....lots of variables. But you don't get 12 tackles by getting trucked. And you can damned sure bet they were using "trucked" in the sense that he got run over and did NOT make the tackle.

The NCAA currently tracks Total Tackles for 200 FCS players. Robby Hauck is #11 on that list, which is ordered by Tackles Per Game (TPG). He's actually #10 in raw Total Tackles. (The ranks are different because one of the TPG leaders has only played in eight games.)

Over ten games, all those nit-picky details should even out over all those tacklers, whatever their positions ... and Robby is still #11/10.

Just so you know: The #1 guy, playing for Western Illinois BTW, is listed as "DB." Of the top 25 guys on the list, all but Robby and the Western Illinois guy are LB. Make of that what you will.
