Starters on Special Teams

Having the starters play on special teams is a bad decision. Not only will it increase the chance of injury and fatigue late in the game, but the number of younger players getting game experience will be greatly reduced. Does anyone know the number of players that played in the game yesterday compared with prior years?

For seniors like Dan Moore, Colt Anderson, Marc Mariani, Chase Reynolds, etc playing on special teams helps their chances to make an NFL roster.. and all of them played special teams as seniors..

Special Teams was the ONLY part of the team that functioned. Look at the numbers their stud return man was averaging and he got a whopping 9 yards yesterday. Put a bunch of rookies on special teams and see what happens. The reason the team was fatigued was because the O turned the ball over 5 times and the D was on the field the entire second half. Don't believe me? Look at TOP in the second half. Some of you people need to take football 101 over.

There was a mix, I saw Dennard, Nate Harris, Rominger, Lebsock, Holt, Crittenden, Coogan, Gamboa, and Owen (all backups) out there a bunch on kickoff coverage. Also Schmaing and another backup OL on kick returns.

This is an interesting topic for discussion. I can see the argument both ways. Moore was replaced by Kirshner on kickoff returns, at least for the last several returns, if my recollection. One punts, I think the stronger o-line is giving our punter more confidence and is helping him punt better and longer.

Moore was replaced on kickoffs as well yesterday after the first one or two.

Brint, they pulled Coogan's RS already? At the South Dakota game I met he and Kose at halftime and they both said that were totally fine with red-shirting

I think if I remember correctly Glenn played a lot of starters on special teams. Was it BH or Pflu that said they want their best players on special teams :?:

Special teams, as we all know, is a very important part of the game. It's a mixed bag sometimes. You don't want a bunch of in-experienced players on special teams that could cost the team a loss. In the same respect, you don't want your starters out on the field all day either. Somewhere there has to be a happy-medium between working the younger in-experieinced players in on special teams with the veterans. I've seen many times that the younger guys want to prove themselves and special teams is a way for them to do that.
