RS 4thPF Gavin DeJong Fr

starting five
I really think our starters as a whole may be better then last year. Obviously Weisner is not Jamar but overall I think the unit will be improved. DeSheilds is a good baller but I think Dunn may end up being better then Cherry or atleast as good. Gregory has elevated his game every year. Weisner lacks physicality but he can shoot from anywhere. I know Breunig is unproven but I still think he will be a little better then Kemp even though Kemp improved as the year went on. The competition alone will make them both better. I'm hoping Martin is also about to reach his potential. He could be a dominant big man in the BSC with a little improvement in some key areas.

the rotation
I like our reserves alot better this year. Last year we had Weisner, Martin, and four Fr doing most of the subbing. This year Martin, Weisner, and Dunn will all be starters but Lopez, Gfeller, and Bradshaw are all a year older. With activating Breunig we now have two big physical bodies to play the 4 and both can releive Martin. Jermaine Edmunds and Daniel Nwoso are also two quality gets with a year of college ball under their belts. They may take a little bit to acclimate to division 1 b-ball but they give us good depth as the 3rd option at the 1, 2, or 3 spots. We have four talented Fr coming in too. I'd love to see Boehning and Krslovic RS because I don't think we need them this year and another year of practice will benefit them but they are still ready to contribute some next year. Muller might play a little but more likley to RS and Tinkle has already said DeJong will RS.

I doubt Mike starts. He is better off the bench and he's a versatile 6-7 th man. My guess is if Edmonds fits in he will start

I agree regarding Weisner. I would rather see Kemp in the starting lineup. Big dude who is fast and isnt afraid of contact. If he doesnt work out, then go with Edmonds.

In addition, Breunig can stroke the 3 ball. I think he may surprise a few in this regard.

Dunn
Gregory
Kemp
Breunig
Martin (only if he improves drastically)

This line up will give us a vastly improved rebounding team that can still work inside and still shoot the 3.

I posted this on the Deshields xfr thread, but it is more appropriate here.

Gregory, Dunn, are sure fire leaders. From what I hear, Breunig will progress to be a leader similar to Ward and Selvig. Even slight improvement in the paint will be of great help from this past season. It really is hard for me to picture any circumstances, other than injury, that we are worse in the paint this coming season than last season.

We cannot replace Jamar. His versatility and overall game is what will be missed most. What needs to be done to help compensate for his loss?
(1) Post players have to rebound better. I have a feeling Breunig will be 7 plus boards per game. Kemp and Martin should average 5 plus. 3 plus rebounds per game from Weisner. Those 4 need to combine for 20 rebounds per game in any combination. I honestly feel that is realistic, and likely. With 24 plus minutes per game, I feel Kemp could easily be 7 rpg. We already know Dunn and Gregory are good for 3 plus rebounds per game each as guards.

(2) Collectively with the loss of Deshields and Jamar we need to find an additional 30 PPG in conference play. Gregory will bust his ass. Gregory is capable of no less than 17 ppg. Dunn no less than 12 ppg. Weisner 12 PPG. Breunig 13 PPG. Martin 5 PPG. Kemp 7 PPG . That alone is 66 PPG. I feel the team needs to be no less than 72 PPG, that is 5 PPG combined from the rest. Gfeller will be a good scorer. The questions is, when will he be a consistent scorer? Edmonds and Nwosu will likely play huge roles in our 1,2, 3 rotation (Edmonds 2 and 3, Nwosu 1 and 2). Bradshaw will be expected to improve. He is a gym rat so I see no reason why he cannot contribute scoring when needed. Granted, the numbers I am speculating on could vary drastically from my examples. No matter who is contributing how much scoring, I see 72 PPG as a realistic goal for the team. Defensively, I guarantee Tinkle will be upset if opponents average more than 70 PPG. I always expect GRIZ defense to give up less than 70 PPG, and likely in the 60's. I do expect the offense to struggle and be inconsistent up until conference play.

(3) Jamar was a solid defender. Defensively, Edmonds will likely be an upgrade once he gets familiar with the system. Nwosu is a wash with Deshields. Dunn is capable of being very close to a Will Cherry like defender. In my opinion our perimeter defense will be better. Just like the rebounding and post scoring, post defense can only be better with new personnel and more experience. I am not one bit worried about the GRIZ Defense.

Overall, I feel some are selling our newcomers short, especially Breunig. I also feel Andy Martin is going to be much more consistent, and be pretty damn solid in conference play. Most the basketball egrizzers can see a boat load of upside with Kemp. No doubt, the skill and potential is there. The only thing holding him back are the factors we as fans do not see behind the scenes. Whatever those factors are, if he takes his talent and coaches expectations seriously, we may see one hell of a PF/4 emerge. I really do hope he is only expected to focus on PF/4 for rest of his career. Question is, Which Chris Kemp will we get from this point forward?

GB1 summed up things well. Without trying to speculate too much and mislead people, I challenge everyone to think back to last season, if needed watch some of the games again. You can figure out where the break downs were and why certain players were slightly disciplined in not starting, having lesser role game to game, or outright inconsistent games. 1 of those players is transferring, despite loving the GRIZ, coaches, and good stats. 1 player stepped up his consistency the last 3rd of the season, and no questionable issues since. 1 player has struggled to find consistency. Only that player can determine how much impact he wants to make for the remainder of his GRIZ career?

I honestly feel the GRIZ will be a much improved conference team this season. Gregory and Breunig are the players who have to stay healthy though. I will be disappointed if the GRIZ lose more than 6 or 7 conference games this coming season. I also am thoroughly preparing myself for a roller coaster of an out of conference seasons. I don't expect any one team to run away with the conference title this season. The conference winner could have as many as 5 conference losses.

Feel free to agree or disagree. I would love to read as many breakdowns, summaries, and opinions as possible here. :thumb:

C Andy Martin Jr

You want Andy Martin to start?

Yes, if he can learn to consistently defend the paint by using his length to stay out of foul trouble, our Defense is and will be much better. I also feel Breunig and Kemp are more effective at the 4/PF than 5/C. I don't want to see Kemp or Weisner at the 5 at all this coming season.

Why bother with a '5?' Why not have two '4's.' Robin Selvig gets away with a 2-2-1 Zone most times anyway.

If Martin can be as good as is expected of him; a 4-5 is deffenetly better then 4-4 for defensive teams. Would the Bulls be better with Gibson-Boozer instead of Noah? 7'0" vs 6'8" is a big diff if your using that 7' right. It's easily better for 1.5 blks that are worth alot more then the 1.5 baskets they denied.

Because Wayne wants to win with D. And without a solid 5 some bigsky teams will dominate the paint on us. Like last year. That's the only reason we lost to psu and nau. The paint battle. Martin needs to usr his size and now we have the rotation of 4 big men. That is whaat everyone overlooks here. 4 big men....last tear we really only had 2 as Martin and hutch were both half a player. I am excited to see some size with and the three ball. Edmonds , nwosu, Gregory, Dunn, wiesner all shoot big pct. From 3. There is no reason we can't be a better team this year. However the we will need to be a better passing team as we don't have Jamar to bail us out down the lane.

That's a lot of 'if's,' there. Personally, I'd rather see Andy Martin take next year as a redshirt year and bulk up somewhat and just relax and learn the defensive game solely. Not to even worry about scoring points.
But due to a lack or personnel in the Frontcourt I'd suppose he'd be at least in the mix next year anyways. I agree that Breunig and Kemp would be more effective at the '4' (PF) than the '5.' Just that I ascertain them working better when both are on the court than one at a time. They'd be able to complement each other while the '3' is handled by either Weisner or Edmunds. This assuming Gregory and Dunn are our starting guard combo.
