The emergence of Daniel Brunskill at the position had to play into it as well. He was just as good, but cheaper.
mtgriz probably nailed it... Niners save a couple million.

Ah, yeah. And now I’m totally confused, lol. I just read that Person signed an extension last season.(in the article you posted, pr... doh! another brain fart day for me)
 
Person will latch on with another team and probably in just a couple days. He's a talented starter, has experience, but isn't a gray-beard. I'd be happy if my Dolphins brought him in to compete for a starting spot at either left or right guard and provide quality depth if he doesn't earn the spot.

Agree. He'll get signed somewhere ... just not (probably) for the kind money he would have cost the Niners.
