Spring To Do List

So what do the Griz need to do this spring to take the next step towards a deeper playoff run? Other than staying healthy (includes vaccination), what does the team need to accomplish?

Build offensive trust and synchronization. Not only do we have a new QB but it will be a 2 years removed from real live football come the fall. We also lost one of our main weapons. Yes we have plenty but it’s not just plug and play.

Defensively we need to find out how we are going to get pressure. I imagine we will be able leave our CBs on islands a little more next year but can we get pressure without sending 6-7 dudes every 2nd and 3rd down?

Lastly, figure out our depth chart at WR and D line. Who is going to step up and actually be able to make a play in the 2nd rotation. Who’s pushing those 1 guys to prove themselves week in and week out

Cal Poly, UC Davis, Eastern Washington, Weber State, Idaho, Idaho State, Southern Utah and Northern Arizona’s to do list is win the Big Sky and make a run in the playoffs. Wish those were on Montana’s to do list.

You won’t think that if one of your stud players is lost on a season ending injury because of subpar training because of COVID. The spring season is a joke on multiple levels. I’ll wait for our run in the Fall.

No more than you will if one of your stud players is lost in the fall or one of your two games this spring. Is it an ideal season? No. Was the last NBA season ideal? No. You take lemons and try to make lemonade.

I am excited to see the Mustangs play for the first time since December of 2019. I am excited to see the new freshmen. I am also excited to Beau Baldwin lead the team. I am sure if the Griz were playing you would be excited even if it is not a NORMAL season.

Sports, including football, are meant to be played. Sometimes there is more risk than at other times. That's fine, and it can and should be noted and discussed. I am surprised by all the Griz fans who are afraid of their shadows. I understand the coaches' concerns about trying to practice and prepare in the presumably bad and slippery weather in Missoula and Bozeman in February and into March. These Griz fans don't seem to be concerned about that.

If schools and coaches were so concerned about injuries, maybe they wouldn't have their players work out year round. There is many injuries in practice, during the summer, in spring ball, and in winter conditioning.

Play ball. Oh, I guess that's baseball.

Sure I would watch with interest and be a fan so I agree there. I just don’t think you can discount the decision that was made. It made sense on multiple reasons including weather in Montana, lack of ideal training, COVID, financial, disruption to class schedules, etc. It all equaled an unsafe scenario for student athletes that could jeopardize the 2021 Fall season.

Definitely agree with you. I think the biggest thing will be figuring out pressure. Hopefully, as you stated, the CBs will handle themselves and let us get more bodies near the line of scrimmage.

As far as the WR depth I think there will be plenty of competition for playing time. Like you said, can't just plug and play, but from everything I've read/heard it sounds like there are some good dudes ready to make their mark.

Do we get a steady RB2 this year? Knight really was the only feature back in 2019 best I can remember. It would be nice to get another solid RB in the mix to let Knight rest/provide a different "spark." Ostmo, likely?

Also, can we stop a powerful run attack like msu's? We were exposed in that game. Statistically good in 19', but overmatched in bozeman. What changes are made to fix that?

HUGE question mark is Dline. Hopefully the extra long time between seasons has allowed some on roster to really bulk up and make the them truly ready

I was thinking the Hurlburt kid was supposed to be a dynamic pass rusher.....very strong and fast with a high motor coming out of high school......he should be ready about now, if all that was true....anyone know how he coming along?
