Spring Scrimmage #1 wrap up

Brady is the No. 1. Phillips will be a great starter in 2017 though, and that will let Gresch Jensen really be groomed and be ready to be a three-year starter.

Didn't Phillips have the most rhythmic series on his last drive? Take out the long blown TD by Gus and the INT and they really played pretty even. Gus bouncing the ball on third and short is what we saw last year along with overthrows. I think this competition is just heating up for QB. Chalich is always going to hold the ball too long.

Take out the 2 pic-sixes and the KO return for a TD and the Griz and NDSU played pretty even too....

LOL. What's funny is that there were posters saying that after the game.....

Difference is, I think it's true. But unfortunately, EVERY PLAY counts....not just the ones where you "played pretty even".

Probably true. But, lots of positive chatter ref Phillips.

Not too often we get SEC drop downs(Van sorta, any others?). That alone is gonna cause chatter. The one pick he had was early and on a crossing route? That could just be a timing thing working with new receivers.

Gus will still probably get the start but if he don't stay healthy, he might not get the job back this year.

Was told a couple of good tidbits tonight. The coaches think the OL is already light years ahead of last season, but in the same regard, there are some fierce position battles going on, with a couple of last year's RS's pushing the older guys.

Secondly, heard Semore continued the tradition that TY always did, which was to steal signals from the O, and in particular on run plays, the defense knew what was coming almost every time.

Two things.

Even if Semore steals the O's signals, how does that translate into the defense knowing what is coming? Does Semore signal in the defensive call, and then signal in what the offense is running? Why does the defense have signals set up in advance to receive a signal of the offensive play? Yes, I understand that Semore can make a better defensive call based on an offensive signal, but I don't get how the defense would know what the play is.

Why would a DC in a scrimmage be doing this, other than very occasionally? Why/how would that help make the team better? Just doesn't seem like what a DC would do, except perhaps on rare occasion.

Seamen is bush league, just like coach Bob's Titts. Enjoy.

Calling you dog shit really isn't that funny..
Seamen for Seymore is lame....
But Bob's Titts is friggn' funny. Even for Cat Fan.....

any news about simis at wide receiver?
yes, he's at WR. ;)

I asked for that....the area I was thinking about was all of our youth at wide receiver and simis might be a diamond in the rough because of being a qb last year,,,,,which means he knows ALL the receivers routes and all check down routes regarding different coverages we will face.....if he has reasonable athletic talent, he could be a real asset in moving the chains in short yardage situations.....

I'm not so sure about that. He seemed to run often if the 1 route was not open. On top of that the O was pretty dumbed down by the time we got to our third QB. I'm still rooting for him though. But, it's a tough row to hoe. There is a bunch of talent at WR.

all good points, I just have a soft spot for him because he is willing to switch positions in order to help the team.....I hope he has real athletic ability or he will not be around long, no matter what he knows...imo

I am really looking forward to seeing the griz scrimmage in Helena this spring. I will buy any griz fan that goes to Lewis and Clark brewery a pint immediately afterwords as long as they were at the scrimmage too.

I really was looking forward to the scrimmage before I found out there would not be one in Helena this year. I enjoyed watching it last year and seeing the progress they made from then to the season.

What?

He said he's really looking forward to the scrimmage. And that there won't be a scrimmage. And that he'll buy you a pint, as long as you were at the scrimmage that's not happening.

Isn't that like two negatives make a positive? I am trying to see if any free beer is involved but I don't think so......

Punting was awful?
I know it's not sexy to discuss, but as I have stressed many times on egriz, Special Teams have never been been great since Hauck left. There's a reason why Hauck was hired by SDSU to run STs, and was promoted from there.

I look forward on reporting of how this aspect of the Griz comes along - never has it been promoted by Stitt as a priority. We'll see if this is part of his learning from mistakes.

I always figured that Hauck had discovered the head coach in bed with either a dead woman or a live boy. I guess special teams coaching is plausible.

8-) In the earlier players to watch out for this year thread, whatever the actual title was, I listed Dante Olson and Jerrin Williams... and since Olson had the most tackles and Williams's pick-six in the scrimmage, I am looking pretty debonair (having a sophisticated charm). :thumb:

The Kentucky kid has a nice arm, throws a tight spiral, and is accurate. He looks good. BG has looked very good from what I've seen. BG seems to run the team better, but that could be partly from being with the first-team personnel more often. There would appear to be competition, and there should be 2 very good qb's if everyone is healthy this fall. This is based on limited data, and more on impression. Don't know numbers of receivers, but there have been too many dropped balls at times.
