Spring Practice Update From UM

In any event this will be a good time for all of us. Wipe out the past and lets continue on. The head coach is the man in charge and when things go well he gets the credit. Same as when it turns sour, the head man tends to smell bad.

Looking at the players on our team and the assistant coaches I feel very good for this up coming season. I will do my best to STAY OFF DELANEY until the third game is complete! We will know by then what our team is made of and how the coaching looks to us. My bet is we will be damn good this coming year.

Up front worry from me is the double head OCs. Not bitching just a concern by me. It might work and I hope it does. Delaney is a very nice guy win lose or draw. That will help the Griz in many ways.

Lets get this thing rolling, quit the whine and support the Griz!

Good post... Coach Delaney is here to stay for at least another year... we should all get used to it & support the man.

okay. But he said the same thing after we lost JJ too. I've learned to take what Umista (and most on this board for that matter) says with a grain of salt.

I was initially concerned about the dual OC thing too. But since then I have learned thats it's more common in college FB than people realize. Plus it will be Kefense in the box calling the plays with input from Gragg from the sidelines. I'm more comfortable with it now.

Buddy have some faith, you can believe it this time. I'm telling you the griz will have a very solid season in 2013.

Just out of curiosity, how much attention does a coach like Delaney pay when they are an assistant?

What I am getting at, is that he wasn't calling the plays as an assistant, so did he get a feel for the players and how the plays transpired?

If you don't know what works, how can you call good plays?

Not trying to make excuses, just asking those who know what happens as an assistant at Montana as to their knowledge of the teams, plays and how the two interact.

Maybe someone closer to the field most games can comment better than my opinion from afar.
To me it looks like the OC and DC call their own plays. I think most of the decision making is done during the week.

I am fine with the HC making the final call on plays or entrusting is coordinators to do so. With that said, Delaney needs to demand a lot more aggressiveness on each side of the ball . In my opinion, aggressiveness was what the GRIZ lacked most last season, on each side of the ball. IT started with very passive play calling on each of the ball. I am hoping for a lot more aggressiveness overall this year, from play calling, tackling, schemes, and creating turnovers.

The jury can be out whether Delaney is a poor, good or great coach, but in my mind too much is placed by some on the HC's credentials. With the talent level and depth of this team, particularly on D, the HC's job is to get out of the way and let the kids play. Sure, he could mess up and cost us some colateral, but I do not think the Griz 2013 level of success is so much on the HC as many on here believe. Pflu was still not looking so good until JJ hit stride in the second half of 2011 and made Pflu's job a lot easier then on. Good players make coaching much easier; we have a lot of good players this year.

This :thumb: :thumb: Put the razor blades down naysayers. Things will be fine. Having an experienced QB that can keep the defense off the field (for at least part of the game) will do wonders. MD may not be the Einstein of coaches, but Kem states it perfectly - his job is to get out of the way and let the kids play. Something I also noticed in the article, were the comments MD made about the former CMR tight end who returned from his mission. Appeared Mick liked his demeanor and what it could possibly do for this team. Mick has a certain attitude and chemistry he is trying to instill in 2013. The head coaches job is to provide leadership, discipline and confidence. MD has the discipline thing down. Hopefully the other two qualities will follow shortly if they do not already exist.

That is my point. If Delaney was not making the calls as an assistant, how was he to know how well the players responded to the situation. Will it take Delaney one season of knowing what each play is, who it unfolds and how to make adjustments?

Once again, I could be crazy and Delaney knew all he needed, but I am just curious.

Always figured that was Pflugrad's issue the first year. Didn't know how all the players fit into their respective roles.

The offense showed what it was capable of after a few series in 11-on-11 competition, as Van broke loose for a 65-yard touchdown run. There were also a couple of nice runs by juniors Jordan Canada and Brett Kirschner. Kirschner, who had been moved from running back to safety this spring, was just moved back to his former position this past Wednesday (March 27).

"I really like the way our running game is shaping up," said Griz head coach Mick Delaney. "We have four or five guys back there who can help us win games.

"Brett was frustrated about not getting on the field last year, so he wanted to try something different," Delaney said. "So I let him try (playing safety) and saw day-by-day he wasn't getting in turns there, and he hadn't played any defense since his junior year in high school.

"So, I just asked him to move back (to offense) because that's where he belongs," Delaney said. "He's a ton behind because of the changes that we've made, but he got more done today and on Wednesday than he did the first part of spring drills and the whole winter program. That's real refreshing to see him bounce around over there and compete."

Maybe this has already been posted, looks like Brett Kirschner was moved back to offense.

thanks for posting and I don't recall seeing it before...nice to see kirschner back on the offensive side of the ball imo...

Good. With Van Akern's signing, Kirschner belongs on offense.
