(Split topic) More Montana recruit discussion

Jesus, I started a shitstorm. lol.

I MEANT FCS or HIGHER....I'm sure there's tons of MT kids that go to D-II, D-III or NAIA schools in Colorado, etc...we just never hear about those ones. I'm wondering about the ones who choose to LEAVE the state, but are deemed FCS-worthy....IOW, that either don't CHOOSE Griz/Cat, or aren't OFFERED Griz/Cat....

Who was the last Montana HS kid to go out of state to play FCS or lower level of football? Seems to me they either play for the Griz or Cats or they play UP (and then some eventually come back, i.e., Roddrick).

I know McElwain went to EWU, but they weren't FCS at the time they were D-II independent...

Anyone? Anyone? Beuller?

Matt Miller (Boise State), Casey McMillan (Iowa), Brock Osweiller (Arizona State). I'm sure there's some more that I'm missing.

PT, I think he said FCS or lower.

Good catch. I read that too quickly...plus that whole FCS, FBS thing confuses me. It was a lot easier with 1-AA.

Oh..........well in that case to answer your question, there is usually 1 sometimes 2 kids per year that leave the state to play FBS. Cody Carriger from Butte signed with Oregon last year. This year may be one of the years where there aren't any. Unless the Hanser kid from Billings ends up going to CSU, WSU, or WYO.

Well, we talk about THOSE kids ad nauseum....I'm wondering how many ever leave to go play for the FCS level teams? Honestly, it seems like other teams either a) know that kids that have the talent will choose either Griz or Cats or b) there isn't enough talent to warrant recruiting the area (kind of like how the Griz maybe feel about North Dakota?).

North Dakota has an estimated population of 683,932 (7/1/12 estimate) according to The US Census Bureau.

Montana has an estimated population of 1,005,141, also the July 1, 2012 US Census Bureau estimate.

Thus, we have over 300,000 more folks here in Big Sky Country than in ND.

As it relates to football, we can expect several more prospects than our neighbors to the east. That said, we will continue to need to recruit skill kids (QB's, WR's, RB's, DB's, LB's, etc.) from out of state as well as some of the big uglies (OL, DL), as Montana is not California, Florida or Texas and never will be in terms of population.

I seem to remember a Montana kid (maybe from Butte) who went to play for Harvard rather than the Cats or Griz...

I am a montana kid.

I believe if you live with only montana kids you will die with montana kids ................Dead last.

I have NEVER fell for the "we need MT kids" to win BS. Get good guys that can play ball and you will win, period!
Get all the Mt kids you can but a great group of top notch players are waiting out of state and the USA.

I'm NPB & I approve his message :thumb:

It's really pretty simple. No sensible person would suggest that UM only recruit MT kids. The number of Sr HS players every year who are capable of playing at this level is limited. Griz need to get as many of the capable MT kids as possible, including walkons, who have become some of the programs biggest stars, eg Colt, Mariani. Over the years the coaches have adhered to this philosophy, and I think it's worked out pretty well.

This! As for the argument that living with Montana kids means dying with Montana kids, I think history proves that argument clearly false. Besides, honest, when I stop seeing Montana kids playing will be when I lose interest. I want us to win all we can, but deep down, I'm there to see the Reynolds, Marianis, Andersons, Farmers, Haucks, Biermanns, Dickinsons, Utterbacks, Bennetts, Hilliards, Carpenters, Dobsons (just to name a few of my favs over the years) on the field. Hmm... come to think of it, we've done pretty good with some Montana boys!

Chris Carlson from Billings West class of 2006 (same as Andrew Selle).

Both his brothers and his dad (I think??) were Griz.

So, mike, you're a Montana high school football fan...not a UM fan.

Yes, that would definitely be one goofy a**ed misinterpretation of what I said.
