Special Teams Thought

Just a thought here.
Thinking about what Monmouth did on kick offs after Flowers took it to the house and how they squibbed it but in the air.
It seemed like the squib quick was to the same person. Why not put JLM in where the squib location seems to be going. That would blow the opposing teams mind!

I know, I know..we don't want JLM injured...but man that would be special to have to chose to kick to Flowers, JLM, or Susler!

There's nothing that can keep/ swing momentum like taking a kickoff to the house. Having said that, if the opposing team wants to continuously give us the ball at the 40 yard line I will take that all day and so will Hauck. That's what having a good return game will do for you. It's like being intentionally walked in baseball.

I can certainly see the original poster's thinking here, though--pooching it to a place where JLM can get to it is almost like punting to him; he would have the ball with some space to operate in, and he doesn't need much.

However, it would probably make the kickoff blocking a bit less robust, should an opponent instead choose to kick off normally.

I'm sure the wheels are turning in the special teams room....

It is kinda like an onside kick. Front line blocks, Sulser on the left JLM on the right, and Flowers deep. Have a return scheme for each return. Kinda neat to have some burners returners.. Go Griz

I remember Brint or someone mentioning on the podcast the plan, had they had better communication, on those pooch kicks was to have Sulser run up and take it, but it didn’t work out.

Like someone else said, I’ll take starting at the 40 all day. If you want to beat the Griz kickoff return, you’d better kick it through the end zone.

BTW, how good is the UCD kicker? Many touchbacks?

Yes, the idea is to let Sulser field those and the up man to step forward and block to him. I saw Bobby explaining that to Bingham after the first kickoff. Downside to that is communication, if the up man thinks that Susler is going to get it and Sulser thinks that the up man is going to, ball lands on the field and not at good situation.

I'd bet they worked on that this week in practice.

BH stated that Sulser just needed to be more aggressive and take those short KOs. That's what they had schemed. If that happens a few times, teams are going to need to look at Plan C.

Here's an interesting observation, re a part of Special Teams.

When the NCAA changed the rule so a fair catch on a kick-off inside the 25-yard line is always placed at the 25, I -- along with a lot of other people -- thought that would pretty much do away with that part of the return game. And I do remember, a couple week-ends back, where we saw what seemed like a lot of KO fair catches. But overall, it seems like far more kicks are being returned than are being fair caught. Could not find any actual numbers, but that is certainly our impression.

I guess the chance of a big morale surge after a long return is just too alluring. Plus, the chance for such glamor has got to be a big motivator for the kick return guys. After all, we all go crazy when a KO is returned for a TD.

Of course, few returns from inside the 10-15 yard line actually do get back to the 25. I'll bet if they changed the stat to only count return yards relative to the 25 -- stopped at the 22 becomes a loss of 3 yards -- would indeed put an end to the KO return. Luckily, I don't see that happening.

It was Mike - but we did talk about it. Sulser had a chance at a TD on one pooch kick as Monmouth left a big portion of the field open for him if he would've fielded the kick.
