Just home from the game. The defense is hugely improved. Surprisingly enough, this defense is great, and looks to be a defense that can win a few games. Pass coverage is much more consistent, and more aggressive schemes. QB's are not being given wide open WR's as often. QB's actually have to work harder to complete passes this season. It will be interesting to see how this defense does against a passing attack this season? I have a feeling they will be solid all year against the pass. Run defense is very tough. It will be hard for teams to consistently run the ball against the GRIZ. NDSU will be a good test to measure how strong our run D is. I think the GRIZ can keep NDSU in check on the ground, and keep them from dominating the ball. Wags, Holmes, and Takai are all playing terrific, against the run and the pass.
Our LB's get to the ball quickly and are much improved in pass defense as well. Hermanson and Whitted are very solid at safety. This secondary covers better, and hits harder than any GRIZ secondary since Hauck was here. This defense creates a lot of turnovers as well. The only thing I see they need to improve on is consistent tackling. Tackling is better this season, but still room for improvement. Overall, I am impressed with this Defense. Here is to hoping the Defense continues to be great.
Offensively, I really am not sure what to think. Offense is a mixed bag so far this season. Let me get my biggest bitch out of the way 1st. Why does this staff go away from the short, quick, and medium passing game so easily? It was a huge play calling issue last season, and so far this season it has been terrible too. The 1st quarter we were moving the ball well with mixing that kind of passing into the game plan. Yet again, we hardly saw it again rest of the game!!!! This is not on the players, this is on the staff!!
As for the good, I like the discipline the team shows in taking care of the ball. I like the decision making of our skill position players. I am surprisingly impressed with our young OL, they are making progress, which is much needed. They struggled with pass protection and part of why JJ is passing inconsistently. However, they are getting in sync in run blocking. They are sustaining their blocks longer and timing is getting better. Canada needs to carry the ball more. He helps his line by just hitting the lane hard and quick. Van and Nguyen should take a few lessons from him. The 2nd half running game was terrific. Also a few of the young OL do have a little attitude. Weyer, Luke, and Reese all have a mean nasty streak in them. Based on what I saw this game, I would not be surprised to see all 3 get more playing time as the season progresses. They could even be starting.
Kicking game really sucks and I pray we get it together.
Great game and W by the GRIZ!!!! Bring on NDSU!!!
