Sounds like many of you likely haven't been to a game there in at least 5 years and likely just miss the days of your bi-annual weekend get-away Spokane and stroll to Cheney where Griz fans outnumbered EWU. I haven't missed an EWU-UM game since 2009 in either Cheney or Missoula. I've witnessed immaturity in both fan bases and I'm not really sure I'd base an entire fan base on a bunch of drunk students. The 50 something year old men in the south end zone screaming obscenities and making gestures to the EWU crowd in 2015 likely doesn't represent all Montana fans, but to each their own...

I've been to the last 3 games in Cheney and the last 2 in missoula. I have also been to 2 of EWUs playoff games. I have travelled to n.col, ISU, MSU, SUU, Weber and UND. All groups including UM have drunk idiots. But EWU is so different if you wear griz gear you are treated like shit. Yelled at, flipped off, thrown at. Most situations it's a small group of fans. EWU it's usually 10 groups of fans that's cause issues. EWU games are okay when it's not the griz. I mean the parking and stadium and facilities all suck but other than that it is a decent place to watch a game. However, I took my niece and nephew and some family that was in the NW two years ago to the Griz EWU game and they had a terrible time. Sister literally had to cover her kids ears from half the walk to the stadium inside because of it all. That being said I have met EWU fans that are great. We usually try and take coats to cover our griz stuff and we take our car without griz logos now to Cheney.

I guess it probably is a lot easier to talk yourself into attending a road game where a win is expected, rather than expecting a loss. :thumb:

I'm sure I'll regret asking, but what exactly was your beef with your trip to Cheney and when was it?

That list would be a mile long. I have been to many road games and the fans at Cheney are absolutely horrible. When you step out of your car and the first person walking by yells "F*** the Griz!" that just sets the tone for the whole game. Has nothing to do with the outcome of the games, been treated like crap during both wins & loses. EWU's latest run of success has only fueled the fans' bad behavior.

With that said, I have been to a game at ISU before and the had a great time, despite the loss (which was like 14 years ago).

I love hearing "F the Griz" - it's the ultimate sign of respect imo.

You are one weird motherfokker.

If our program consistently sucked, no one would hate us.... It’s good to be hated in sports. Unfortunately, the tables have turned on Griz fans.

Constantly bashing everything EWU, as they regularly beat UM is kinda embarrassing.

I'm not denying there are idiots. I've even witnessed it from time to time, however, step back and look at it from a different point of view. This very thread puts a spotlight on the arrogance of some of the fan base. Years and years of facility bashing, town hating, and fan grading helped lead to a lot of animosity. When the tables turned and EWU began beating UM regularly, some nastiness probably did show. It's likely starting to calm some now, but it's kinda the nature of the beast. I think it's more of a mutual respect between the programs now that both know what it's like to be on top.

The location of my tailgate allows us to meet many fans from visiting teams. This past EW game was no different. I met with probably 50 or more fans, most enjoyed a Griz beer or at least a shot. None of them were disrespectful in any way. Loud foul mouth or destructive fans have no place in the game no matter what side you're on.

That's because your tailgate wasn't in Cheney.

This is a good, and very reasonable post.

And therefore has no business on this website.

Fans at ewooo are the worst in the conference. It's primarily limited to the students (although I had a 40+ year old jump in front of my 80 year old parents a few years ago after a game and curse a blue streak at them), but they are awful there. Fans at ISU are generally rather pleasant.

That said, both towns absolutely SUUUUCK! Both are terrible college towns. Neither have decent places to eat or fun bars.

I got home yesterday at the same time as my neighbor. The lifetime Idahoan asked where we had been. After we said Pocatello he said, "why in the f*** would you go to that hellhole?" I have had better food in jail.

As a native of north-central Idaho, that’s so funny and I concur!

I read all the responses and since I started the thread I will respond. First, if you have read many of my posts this season you may want to rethink the "win is expected" comment. :thumb: I certainly did not take a win for granted. ISU is always a hard place for the Griz to win even though the record there would indicate otherwise.

Our experience at Cheney was just not a fun time and it wasn't any one thing. Part of it was the stadium. We sat in the wooden bleachers on the field in the south endzone. It is certainly no ones fault that the stadium won't accommodate more fans but they are the worst seats in any stadium I would imagine. It was difficult to get to your seat since there are no isles so you have to navigate through fans to get to and from your seat. It was cold, wet and slippery. No problem with fans sitting around us at all but they were typically older folks. Concessions and restrooms were small and had long lines. Gave up on getting something warm to drink which was probably good since the line to the small restroom was very long and it took a couple tries to get into it since I didn't want to miss huge parts of the game while waiting.

The worst part was after the game. Since you are on ground level we had to walk around the end of our seating and then back toward our entry. We were all stopped by security to let the teams and every other person on the field to include band, equipment folks, press and anyone who was on the field pass in front of us through the roped off aisle way. So a huge crowd was bunched up while all these folks exited the field which took about 20 minutes. Included in that group were some intoxicated young people that yelled vulgarities at the Griz players as they walked by. Not a problem unless you are standing elbow to elbow with people and have to listen to it for 20 minutes. If there had been intoxicated Griz fans present it would have gotten real ugly. Fortunately the Griz fans stayed quiet and behaved although some were getting quite irritated. We nearly missed our bus while this took place.

So for my wife and I it just wasn't a fun game to attend. Of course a win may have put a little different shine on it but I doubt it would have made much difference.

My original post dealt mostly with the game day environment at Pokey to include nice folks and a very comfortable venue to watch the game. EWU just wasn't a fun game to attend. Now if I really, really expected the Griz to win I may journey back so I could trash talk for twenty minutes. However, I am way on my way to the downside of middle aged so that probably wouldn't be a smart thing to do. :thumb:

Wow, I have been to all of the same games over the years and have witnessed almost none of these same occurrences that all of you griz fans have reported. Yes, it is a crummy stadium and does not have the amenities that old, soft griz fans require. Once again egrizzies are victims. Seems to be a reccurring theme.

GE do you have a favorite BS venue?
Or how about least favorite and why?

Wasn't there a very well-documented situation/altercation a while back in between Griz players and/or fans because they had to walk to the locker sheds through the EWU fans or something? I'm not being sarcastic, I just seem to remember something about it. I feel like the EWU administration even got involved. Can anyone help me out here?

Wear a GRIZ hat next time you go to an ewu game. Then come back and give us a report, Einstein. You'd think a guy with 14 advanced degrees would understand field research.

I suppose it's a matter of perception, but you have never been a Griz fan at a game in Cheney.

I have been going to EWU games over there since the Joe Albi days and the hostility in recent years has been palpable (a middle aged fellow even tried to pick a fight with me there a few years ago when I had the audacity to cheer when the Griz got a first down). I'll keep going to games in Cheney, but it ain't because of the hospitality. I felt more welcome as the only Anglo in a packed Arcade Bar full of drunks on the Billings southside back in the day.

Have always been treated well in Pocatello.

The only negative altercation I remember was one young, drunk dumbshit Eagle fan who was talking trash to a Sam Houston State Player who could have turned the idiot fan inside out. It was in the area where the players are trying to get back to the locker rooms. I do not argue that was a bad situation and no athlete should have to put up with that.
