So you guy's signing anyone?

This spring the Griz entertained quite a few JC small forwards and some high school gaurds, but I have not seen any anouncements. Of the 5-6 players that that I have heard may have been up for a visit I think only Steve Neal from Southern Idaho JC is still currently unsigned (as far as I know) I also heard that the griz would only sign a player or two IF it was a top knotch player otherwise they were going to wait until next year. Anyone got anything.

I was hoping you'd have something.... Compared to all of the cat signings discussed on bobcatnation..the silence is deafening on the GRIZ hoops front.

i've been disappointed too. i'd heard that our first-round success and all the attendant publicity--especially around krystkowiak--had really boosted our recruiting profile, enabling us to go after some kids that previously would have been beyond our reach. i'm sorta disappointed that we didn't get one of the kids late that we were after, especially the kid from minnesota.

but let's point out, this is a solid program. we had our best recruiting class ever this year, and every one of those kids signed early. unlike the cats, whose program is in a real state of flux right now with new coaches on board and a couple of kids de-committing as a result, we didn't really need to do anything this spring. the best we might have hoped for was an upgrade at one position. that that did not happen is not going to affect next year's team very much, and i think it's way to early to expect any verbals (non-binding, anyway) before next november.

Just to lighten you guy's up. I have heard (since I posted this thread) that the Griz will be anouncing a signie or two. They are just waiting for all the pieces to fall into place.

If Van Vliet is gone, then they should have at least 2 vacant scholarships, right? V V and that Washington kid that signed but decided to bail before school even started. Add into the mix the possible transfer rumor (Martin, perhaps) which I think got squashed. Possible 3 scholarships to give, but most likely 2. I'm not really concerned either way. We only lost 2 players to graduation, and brought in 4 high caliber guys.

Does anybody know what happens if they don't use all the scholarships? what happens to the extra money?

If only Van Vliet leaves that means there is one more available scholarship. Confirmed scholarships opening include Seyfert, Criswell, Matthews and Staudacher. Scholarships offered and accepted include Graves, Chase, Rundles and Vanderjagt. Also, I seriously doubt that Matt Martin is leaving.

The Griz signed all 13 of their scholarships for 2006-07 last fall. Since then there has been very good indications that Van Vleit may not be back, that would open up one scholarship to use before the start of the school year. To sign someone else, one of the returning players would need to be cut, or quit or a third possiblity could be an incoming recruit could ask for a release from his scholarship (as happened at MSU).

In any case there is a July 1st (or so) NCAA deadline approaching in which the head coach must identify which returning players will have their scholarships renewed, as well as new players who will be under scholarship for the coming year (ie leters of intent or commitment). This deadline was established years ago to allow the NCAA verify the schools compliance with scholarship restrictions, as well as give "cut" players some time to find new homes.

All should start to be come clear soon.
