My wife had an interesting observation. She wondered if the relative lack of enthusiasm for specific players was "fear of the Portal." Tout someone too much, and they might get poached through the Portal.Sadly, not an unwarranted thought these days.

I think it’s interesting seeing the various approaches to handling the portal and players that no longer have to stay and fulfill a 4-5 year commitment (not a dig, just a fact). Now programs don’t even want to showcase players in spring games. At what point do fans lose interest when they don’t have a product or aren’t interested in figuring out a new team year in and year out? I think the only thing you can do is use what you got while it’s here and build a culture that makes people want to stay and have plans for when that doesn’t happen.
I do like that the idea of a buyout finally got mentioned by a coach the other day. After investing in guys, it would only be fair for big programs to pay back for some of the finances that went into getting a guy ready to make the jump or showcasing their talent to show what they missed out on.
