Well, now we're cookin'. Great to see.

My wife had an interesting observation. She wondered if the relative lack of enthusiasm for specific players was "fear of the Portal." Tout someone too much, and they might get poached through the Portal. :D Sadly, not an unwarranted thought these days. :cautious:

I think it’s interesting seeing the various approaches to handling the portal and players that no longer have to stay and fulfill a 4-5 year commitment (not a dig, just a fact). Now programs don’t even want to showcase players in spring games. At what point do fans lose interest when they don’t have a product or aren’t interested in figuring out a new team year in and year out? I think the only thing you can do is use what you got while it’s here and build a culture that makes people want to stay and have plans for when that doesn’t happen.

I do like that the idea of a buyout finally got mentioned by a coach the other day. After investing in guys, it would only be fair for big programs to pay back for some of the finances that went into getting a guy ready to make the jump or showcasing their talent to show what they missed out on.

It's an interesting conundrum: Showcase a player, and he may get poached. DON'T showcase a player and he may get miffed and enter the portal anyway. It's become a lose/lose situation.

Yep. About the only consolation (if you can call it that) is that it's probably an even bigger problem for the big boys, where the lucrative NIL $$$ adds to the problem.

Reminder: You can change your vote. Myself, despite all the discussion, I have not seen anything that has led me to change.

Quarterback depth is an issue. Gilman was good in 2024 but not the "spark" that he displayed in 2023.
So, are you thinking that Jensen won't be as good as Fife and/or Flowers won't be as good as Huot? I assume Ah Yat will be better, at least somewhat. I see you used the term depth.

(bump)
Been great, but would be nice to see more votes ... and discussion.
I know this is only a message board, but it seems way too early for fans to have anything other than a vague feeling of where the team is or will be. No fan can know where the QB's stand. And there are so many new and young players. There is considerable and promising talent, but there are many holes to fill. I voted, but only with my heart and not my head.

You are, of course, absolutely right about it being too early for any in-depth assessment of the strengths / weaknesses of the team. So ... "feeling" is the appropriate term. The poll (and associated discussion/comments) sought to gauge fans general notions (feelings) about the players the Griz have in camp. Those of us in Idaho (and even further away) have no chance to see for ourselves and few, if any contacts to learn more. We can bookmark publications that have Montana sports news, but even that is pretty thin. Threads about individual players are great, but provide little in the way of perspective.

Time enough after summer/fall camp to start projections of how many games the Griz will win. ;)

Recent comments, re recruits and portal gets, seem a bit more positive about the Griz prospects for the coming season. Thought I'd bump this poll in case anyone wanted to change a vote ... or perhaps enter a new vote.

I’m super optimistic every year. For one thing, we’ve gotten to start every year knowing we weren’t the scats. So we’ve always had that going for us. Plus I’m usually a hopeful guy and when you’re hopeful, you think good thoughts. Not everyone on eGriz is a hopeful person though. Some of us have zero hope.

I hope that some will leave, Does that work?

Oh there's a few who are just certain they've got it figured out. Experts in their own minds, you know...

I always felt the NFL should have given some money to the school in which a player was drafted, especially if they don't graduate. Nothing crazy, maybe just reimbursement of room, board and education. Chump change for the NFL.
