So What Do You Really Want?

Having read a few posts it sounds like a few people think that the football program was rotting from the inside out. Where is this idea coming from? When I look at the situation I see a lot of good kids going above and beyond what is expected of them as students, athletes and even members of the community. This of course, as is usually the case, is almost completely disregarded when a bad seed is at work. The rape issue as I see it was brought to the forefront by the actions of a non US citizen who had no affiliation with any athletic program. Allegations have been made in some cases but those are simply that, alligations, until proven otherwise. Other issues have been dealt with in the form of players being expelled from the team, the right decision, and something that every other football team in the country deal with on an anual basis. I think that the real problem at the UofM is a serious case of being a prisoner of the moment and over reaction. Now two quality men and two moral assets to the University have been lost. That is truly unfortunate.
 
I could talk for days about this but I don't have the time or energy. Essentially, I'm embarrassed that this situation is what people will likely think of first when I tell them my degree is from UM.

I highly doubt that is the first thing they will think of. This isnt a Penn State type of situation. Its far more regional and far less sensational.

Where were other teammates when the young men were putting themselves in positions to be judged by fans and the community? Teamwork isn't just on the field, they know the bullseye is on them. Insitute a "buddy system" when one thinks stupid the other one can say the new word "REALLY". Just like driving drunk, somebody has to be "RESPONSIBLE" in the group, if not they are all destined for stupidville.

Well I've probably pissed off a few, and maybe some will get it. Doesn't sound to me that the talent on the field is, or was the problem so maybe this swift kick in the backside will wake up the staff/coaches and the community, just goes to show, that all heroes no matter who still have to wipe their ass with paper.

I look forward to following this team as well as the whole FCS, looks like you all put out a good product on the field, it's when their is no yard lines, or end zone a 'MAJOR BRAIN FART ERUPTS".

What I really want is the University of Montana to be a high-quality academy (first) with a great athletic program (a distant second).

Up until I was 17 I didn't care about the Griz. I knew about the successful football team but as far as former players and coaches went I was basically clueless (I picked my eGriz username well before I realized that was Don Read's nickname). I chose to attend UM solely because of academics.

But it didn't take long for me to fall in love with Griz football. I'll cheer for Griz athletics til I'm dead. Plain and simple they're MY team. Just like 90% of the people on this board. I'm friends with current, former, and future players but my allegiance goes deeper than familiarity with individual players. Being a Griz is embedded in my psyche now.

But simply put, I would rather be associated with a clean program that loses than a ridiculously sleazy program that wins. Whether the accusations and/or charges of the past couple of years are warranted or not, it's horseshit and it needs to stop.

College kids will have a good time and make bad decisions. We all did or wish we could have. But this program has spiraled and I have grown weary of members of my team being frequent guests in the police blotter.

I'm not endorsing or condemning Engstrom's decision because I don't know all the facts. And neither do you brainiacs. So before you canonize or behead anyone involved, take a deep breath and realize that in the grand scheme none of this really matters all that much. Engstrom is dealing with a bigger picture than just Griz athletics and O'Day/Pflugrad will land on their feet (both smart men with talent). And Griz football will rebound.

So I guess to return to the original question, I want the current football culture to end. I don't care about whether it's just perceived or reality, it's all bad. I want players to use better judgement and us to withhold judgement if at all possible

Great post! I think your viewpoint reflects that of the silent majority of Griz fans who don't waste their time on message boards.
