So, I love Mick but he is in way over his head...

I sure hate to lose, same as all of us.

The trouble began when we lost our "head" coach due to Engstrom's abrupt firing of the man without having a concrete plan in mind for the future. Hiring Mick was sort of a quick and easy way out. Little thought was made of our long term future at that point, Royce simply made a desperate move. I thought we all agreed this was to be a long and "not so good season" because of the turmoil.

Mick is doing the best he knows how to do. The kids are playing very well and I am damn proud of them for the effort they are giving. Yes we might lose some more games this season and the chances are very good we have a new head coach soon. Now is not the time to jump ship, you will see us win a few more games and after all we have had one hell of a run over the past years.

It can be stated "I like Royce but he is in way over his head" and I think that could be a more accurate statement. Yo?

I am still a Griz. No one is dead. More football coming up. Life will go on.

Thanks for this. I think we're probably in for a long 3 or so years. If Mick resigns at the end of the season, we will bring in a new coach next season and we'll see the adjustments to a new system with all it's ups and downs. We just need to gird ourselves and watch our team rebuild for a while. It will be fun and interesting....And painful

Coach D is from all accounts a heck of a guy. I believe he resigns at the end of the season and that was the plan all along.

I think the interim tag was taken off and a " 2 year" contract given to show some stability in the program. As is Mick has his hands full trying to keep this team together. If he still had the interim tag we might not even have the two wins we have.

So I honestly believe Mick calls it in at the end of the season and UM brings in a new coach.

I do commend Mick however for taking on this roll.

What's Pat Hill doing these days! ;)
Our next head coach is already here. The situation is about as predictable as when Pflugrad showed up. If Timm Rosenbach isnt the next HC, and they hire an outside guy, I will blown away.

The real problem is Gregorak! He needs to go back to the NAIA level again. He has know idea on how to make adjustments throughout the game.. The guy is all emotion and knows nothing about coaching!

Gregorak is a terrific coach and teacher, and probably the best-liked coach by the players in the last decade or two. Go back to NAIA? He was never at that level, was he? Played at Colorado, coached at UW, UM, UNLV, Central Washingston (one year). You need to lay off the weed. Obviously, has had serious affects on you.

Mick was extended because UM had the foresight to not overpay a long-term option during the upcoming NCAA penalty seasons. Why pay good money to a coach who won't even be playoff-eligible for at least 2 seasons?

Delaney's salary is higher than Ash's, by only a few thousand.

Really? We had this won but no...... we have to go into some powerder puff offense scheme and a 3 man rush. Christ quit kiddin yourselves-this was a horrible job of coaching. Absolutely horrible!! A flawed team-- what a crock!!

So, a game virtually noone expected us to win, and we've got a 9 point lead with 3 minutes to go. EWU gets a flukey bounce on an onside kick and go on to score...game ends with us on the 10 yard line and THAT'S a horrible job of coaching? Doesn't he get any credit for the 57 minutes where the team played WAY above what anyone expected?

Well said, they should get credit. The Griz came ready to play and that speaks volumes about the coaching staff. With that said, it was inexcusable to use two time outs midway in the 4th quarter. The first time out was somewhat understandable, though avoidable with clear direction from the head coach. The second was something I would expect to see in a highschool game. To actually come out and attempt to draw them offsides was laughable. You simply do not waste a time out like that in a close game. I don't know if we would have won if we had one or two more timeouts near the end of the game - but given where we ended up, it sure makes you wonder. Mick is not an experienced head coach and, similarily Pflu (who was also not an experienced head coach) made a lot of bonehead decisions his first year too. He will get better - and so will the griz.

And yet, if the ploy had worked and we HAD drawn them offsides, Mick's a genius. Face it, he's damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.

Oh, and hindsight is 20-20.

Can someone explain why delaney gets a pass on the same stuff that many of you railed on Pflu for, who was a far better head coach.

Is it because he's 107 years old and you've been taught to be kind to your elders?

For me it simple: Mick was handed a flawed team in a shitty situation and has to make the best of it. Pflu was handed the keys to a cadillac. HUGE difference. Also, we KNEW this team was flawed even WITH Johnson at QB....with 10 defensive starters graduating it was going to be a "learning" year...and that has come to pass...

Fair enough on the tough situation...but, if Pflu had wasted those to's that were later needed, we'd have people on here questioning his IQ. Turnovers were his fault, penalties also. Just seems weird to me.
IMO, delaney is trying to take everything that has been built in the last two years, and return it to a play it safe, run out the clock offense...not good.

AZGRIZFAN....you couldn't be more correct in your posts today. Mick has put together an excellent football team and should be given credit. He isn't over his head..his team gets better every game, the players all work hard and play with heart until the very last play. The Griz are going to start winning games again and as Brint has said could go undefeated in regular season. They deserve our support..Mick deserves our support. Go Griz!

The objective of just about every head coach is to "shorten" the game...you get a lead and you start working the clock, shortening the game...limiting possessions. Seriously, if we'd recovered that onside kick, Mick is being heralded today as a genius for going in and winning a game many on here thought was unwinnable.

Coaching 101. I have coached in the past. Learned on the job so to speak. When I look back at my record I see how easy it is to be down on a coach after a loss no matter the cause.

When my teams won championships after posting some dismal seasons and I took all the flak from parents etc. that did not have a clue about almost anything I swore I would never be critical of another coach. Course I have been critical (I try not to) but so much more goes into it than we see as fans. Remember this, it's very easy to be critical but it is very damn hard to be right most of the time.

From my perspective I see some damn good coaching and teaching going on at the football program. It would behoove some of you to get with the coaches and see for your own eyes what is transpiring. Just from some of these ignorant posts it is obvious many fans do not have a clue.

Remember we have an extremely young team. Youngest in my memory. I hate to lose but that is what we get with youngsters playing, new head coach, new assistants and a big rape turmoil. We are actually very lucky we are playing as well as we are. The U has lost kids due to the rape blather, on and on. No we are damned lucky to be playing as well as we are.

The three games we lost all could have been won. Turnovers have been the killer NOT the coaches. Not the refs. Not the luck. Plain old turnovers. Stop the turnovers and we win out, simple as that.

We are still a good football team!

Yup, I agree. We are better than I thought we would be, and are close, but making too many mistakes to get the wins. Tough early schedule. I remain positive and hopeful, and think we could even make some good noise late in the season.

Probably just played the best teams on our schedule right of the bat. Obviously, the record could be better. I think the Griz could go undfeated the rest of the way. I'll check back on my statement when the time comes. If EWU is as good as many on this board seem to think, then the Griz are ceratinly not as bad as others on here seem to think. This team has some issues, but thev'e got some huge strengths. Honestly, we ran over Eastern, however, we fumbled twice inside our own ten and gave away an onside kick, simple as that. Knee jerk reactions are rarely acurate, AZ Griz summed it up well about people counting out the Griz before the game and then complaining when they lost. Too funny. This team will be stacked in the coming years. As for this year, I see a good string of wins starting next Saturday. Go Griz.

Team is NOT flawed thats absolute BS!
We are not utilizing the collection of talent we have efficiently (yet!).

This team is still finding its way & has been doing so under extreme circumstances. This team & program is still bouncing back from all the off & pre-season distractions. Think about it.

- Up until the beginning of fall camp...tell me you didnt think JJ would be the QB!
- NCAA investigation still looming over head & with no direction to players (other then dont talk about it)
- Five (5) games in & still distracted w Kemp issues (could use him in several ways & players know it too)

It's all the ripple effect of the biggest firing(s) in athletic department history. These are big underlying
issues that run deep within the program. These guys need your love & support for the Griz now more then ever before.

Because the next 3 or 4 years we are going to kick some serious butt & win a couple more championships.
There's a lot of your talent as players & coaches that need time to figure it out "together".

GREAT programs in the toughest times go 6-5; 7-4; or 8-3 while they clean up a mess.
Then they bounce back to championship form quickly with the right leadership within & around the team.

Be that RIGHT type of leadership around the team...Support dont criticize.
The Gris are not far away from the championship days that you are accustomed too!

See you in Greeley
Maul 'Em
