every off season the men's teams dominate the chatter...jimmy wilson shoots a guy to death.. this is the year the football team wins a national championship...three-star recruit derek selvig signs on with the griz...mcgillis transfers back from oregon state...football stadium to expand again...hauck moves on to (fill in the blank).

and then the seasons start, and i find myself falling in love yet again with the lady griz. while our football players are covering the police blotters, the biggest scandal to come out of the lady griz program in 30 years is robin selvig's getting lost while driving a strange contraption called a car. while derek selvig redshirts for the men, true freshmen tolbert and ena win immediate playing time and emerge as potential stars for the lady griz. while our football team is losing to itty bitty wofford, our lady griz are slapping a 15-point win on oregon state of the pac ten. while speculation is rife about where bobby hauck will wind up next year, robin selvig embarks on his 30th year as head coach. while a men's assistant gets his second d.u.i., the two top women's assistants begin their 27th and 16th consecutive years respectively with nary a mark on their records. while our football team takes on the likes of fort looie and southeasetern timbuktoo state, the lady griz compile impressive won-loss records against big-name schools throughout the country.

oh, sure, lovers have their arguments, and i've had mine--especially selvig's failure to recruit black players. but even this oversight may have been remedied with the recent signing of tiana ware from bakersfield.

so: a winning program, stable home-grown coaching staff, high graduation rates, no scandals, smooth integration of native amercans and blacks into the program, rabid loyal fan base, young athletes you can be proud of...i ask you...

what's not to love?

They have to get more athletic under the basket. Their rebounding has to improve. The good teams seem to own the griz on the offensive rebounds. If the ladies can improve there then they will have a complete team and win more of the big games.

I love the LG as much as anyone, and Robin is approaching Saint status.

But I think it's fair to say that the Lady Griz have underachieved so far this year. They really haven't been in their games against the top-tier talent they've played.

not only underachieved this year but it really started last season come tourney time. What a let down.

But, don't let that make you all think I don't believe they will win the sky, because I certainly do think they will if everyone gets healthy.

With Portland State beating Gonzaga; Idaho State defeating UCLA and Northern Colorado beating Pacific recently, it may be harder than you think.

I see Lady Griz beat Portland tonight. Any details?

Pretty big win on the road and without Mandy Morales.

Senior Laura Cote scored a season-high 17 points to lead the University of Montana women's basketball team to a 67-63 victory over the University of Portland Wednesday night at Portland, Ore. The Lady Griz, who improved to 4-3 with the victory, trailed 25-20 at the break but scored 47 second-half points on 45.8 percent shooting to rally back from a 10-point second-half deficit.

The Pilots dropped to 6-3 with the loss.

Montana trailed by as many as 10 points in the opening half, falling behind 21-11 when UP's Lauren Angel hit a jumper at the 9:55 mark.

The Lady Griz scored nine of the half's final 13 points to pull within five at the break, 25-20. Senior Johanna Closson scored six of UM's closing nine points of the half.

Montana shot just 29.6 percent in the first half, including a 0-for-5 effort from 3-point range, and committed 12 turnovers, but stayed in the game by limiting the high-scoring Pilots to 32.4 percent shooting and holding a 26-22 rebounding advantage.

Portland went back up by 10 early in the second half, taking a 39-29 lead on a Meagan Bermingham jumper at the 16:24 mark, but the Lady Griz would slowly work on the lead.

Montana pulled within three points on three occasions mid-way through the second half, then finally took the lead for good on a Cote 3-pointer with 6:34 to play that put the Lady Griz up one, 48-47.

Junior Britney Lohman converted a three-point play inside and sophomore Lauren Beck hit two free throws to make it 53-47. Cote then closed out the decisive 10-0 run with a basket to make it 55-47 with 4:45 to play.

Portland closed to within three points, 58-55, with just over two minutes to play and within two, 65-63, with seven seconds to play, but Montana went 9-for-10 from the line over the final 1:23 to hang on for the victory.

Cote and junior Sonya Rogers both went 4-for-4 from the line down the stretch.

"It was one of those games that you have to grind and grind and grind because they just get after you," Lady Griz coach Robin Selvig said after the game. "They are physical, and they get their hands on everything.

"I'm proud of the effort because it wasn't a pretty first half. To go on the road and beat a good team, what a fun win for us to end this long stretch of road games."

Cote matched a career high with six rebounds to go with her 17 points. Rogers finished with 15 points. The back-court starters combined to go 10-for-17 from the field and hit all 10 of their free throw attempts.

Closson also finished in double figures with 12 points. She added a season-high four steals.

Lohman finished with a team-high 10 boards to help Montana to a 53-38 rebounding advantage.

Beck came off the bench to add seven points, five rebounds, three blocks and a steal in 24 minutes.

The Lady Griz shot 37.3 percent for the game and out-scored Portland 27-14 from the line. Montana limited the Pilots to 28.2 percent shooting in the second half, 30.1 percent for the game.

UP was 5-for-26 (.192) from 3-point range.

The Lady Griz matched a season high with 26 turnovers.

Laiken Dollente led Portland with 13 points. Rachel Warren had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds and added four blocks.

After opening the season with six of its first seven games on the road, Montana will play its next nine at home, starting with Cal State Northridge (0-7) on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Dahlberg Arena.
