Just to clarify and so that internet rumours don't outstrip reality; the 1970 Dartmouth football team won an award called, back then, the Lambert Cup. It is voted on by a group of New York City sports writers and is given to a team that plays east of Ohio and from Virginia north.
Dartmouth never played Penn State who went 7-3 that year and featured NFL top 100 All time LB Jack Ham, Hall of Famer Franco Harris and College Hall of Fame and 3 time Pro Bowler Lydell Mitchell.
Dartmouth went 9-0 with 7 wins in the Ivy League. None of the Ivy League teams were ever ranked that season. Their two out of conference wins were a home win against a 4-5-1 U Mass team and a road win against Holy Cross who went 0-10-1.
