Silver-Maroon Scrimmage for both Griz and Lady Griz

Last years Silver-Maroon Scrimmage, Jack McGillis scored 26 points playing for both colors. He basically lead the Silver to a big first half lead (or maybe he started out maroon in first half). Second half, he switched to the other team (maroon or silver depending on what color he played for in first half). His second half team scored big and overall, silver and maroon tied sending it to overtime.

Jack would have made a huge difference last year, but wasn't eligible. This year he will be eligible and I predict will be a huge contributor to the Griz success story this year(Sure hope it turns out a success).

But, I know what Jack can do. I am now more interested in what some of the new guys can do. Will there be the guy other than Jack to jump start this team to heights never achieved by a Griz team in history (like sweet 16)(okay lets sugar coat it a little).

I sure will be looking for that guy. Will it be Anthony Johnson? Or Banny? Michael Taylor? Of course, can't forget some of the players that actually played on the team last year like Hasquet, Staudacher, Elgin-Taylor, Qvale.

For Lady Griz:
I know what to expect from most of the team (great depth), but will definitely be interested in some of the newcomers such as Shaunte Nance-Johnson, Alexandra Hurly, and Tianna Ware.

I just got back from the Men's scrimmage and have a few quick thoughts. I have not seen any stats yet so what I say is not based on stats, just observations. Anthony Johnson-look out when this guy gets hot. He has a quick sorta fadeaway shot that is tough to defend. He got it away accurately and consistently against McGillis, a guy who knows how to defend and defend tough. Anthony also hit a couple of of 3s and uses his quickness and guile extremely well when going to the basket. Selvig has really made progress. He defended and rebounded well. He also made some great passes. McGillis had a quiet first half but really came to life, scoring wise in the second half. Hasquet looked fine as did Qvale. I think Qvale looks more confident this year. Vassy Banny is quick, runs the floor well and really defends. Stockton looked comfortable at the point and Michael Taylor made some extremely nice passes. He is a natural point guard. CET and Sharp looked good. Sharp was tough underneath. Staudacher hit some shots in the first half but was a little off in the second half. Mathias Ward was there, but in street clothes. Diggs also looked extremely good for a true freshman. At one point in the second half, he stole the ball on an in bounds play (I think) and scored. He can really jump and has a lot of court smarts for a freshman. I look forward to some other observations and the stats. :)

Thanks for the post! I too want plenty of in depth posts/analysts. Where do you see Selvig seeing PT at?
PF, C, or SF? I am guessing mainly PF and C.

Maroons beat Silver 57-50

Forwards Jordan Hasquet and Jack McGillis combined for 27 points as the Maroon team defeated the Silver squad 57-50 in The University of Montana Grizzlies’ annual Silver-Maroon scrimmage Tuesday evening in UM’s Dahlberg Arena.

"All-in-all it was a pretty good effort for this early in the season," said third-year Griz head coach Wayne Tinkle. "The two things that concerned me were our level of intensity was not where it should be, and we were too careless with the ball. I am sure we will continue to make progress the next couple of days and play better this Friday."

Hasquet, a 6-9 senior from Missoula and four-year starter for the Grizzlies, scored 15 points, while McGillis a 6-6 junior transfer from Oregon State via local Hellgate High School scored all 12 of his points in the second half.

Junior guard Anthony Johnson, a 6-2 transfer from Yakima Valley CC and native of Tacoma, Wash., scored a game-high 20 points. Redshirt center/forward Derek Selvig, from Glendive, scored 7 points and led the Silver team with 5 rebounds.

Many of the players switched teams at halftime, and in a couple of cases during the halves.

Sophomore center Brian Qvale, from Williston, N.D., played for both squads, and ended up with 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field and made 6-of-8 free throws, and grabbed 6 rebounds. Veteran forward Kyle Sharp, a 6-7 senior from Hollister, Calif., played for both squads and chipped in 7 points and 7 rebounds.

Junior Vassy Banny, a 6-4 transfer from Salt Lake CC via the Ivory Coast also played on both teams and pulled down 7 rebounds and had a pair of blocks.

"I thought Anthony looked very good offensive, especially in the second half when he scored 15 points," Tinkle said. "Vassy played well on the defensive end. Michael Taylor (a sophomore guard from Brewster, Wash. and transfer from Eastern Washington) did a very good job of running the team and played good defense."

Guard Ryan Staudacher, a 6-3 junior and returning starter from Kirkland, Wash., added 8 points for the Maroons.

"I really like our nucleus of returning players plus the new guys," Tinkle said.

Montana hosts Northwest College of Kirkland, Wash., Friday, Oct. 31st at 7:00 p.m. in an exhibition game.

Northwest College won't be much of a test, but exhibitions are designed to play the younger guys to see who is going to redshirt. On a side note, former Griz walkon Greg Spurgetis will return to Dahlberg to face his former teammates as he is now at NW College.

reading between the lines...
--our bigs are improved;
--the new guys are good to maybe (johnson, taylor, mcgillis) really good;
--banny can defend (i like this kid already;)
--taylor may be a true point guard, meaning...we can redshirt all the freshmen!

Excited about the season...Love Jordan and Jack already...They are our ticket to success...They were looking good tonight and I expect that to continue thoughout the year! :!:

Here are my two cents.......

Jordan Hasquet - a little lethargic but played well.... played all over the floor on offense wich i love, got some huge rebounds, was physical, shot well..... looks to be in very good shape and is primed to have a great year....
pre season predicion: Jordan caps his career as Big Sky MVP

Jack McGillis- played very hard especially in the second half....very well rounded offensively and defensivley is great. A couple HUGE dunks and can get to the basket whenever he wants. Has a super quick release on his jumper and shoots with range.....
pre season prediction: 1st Team All Big Sky Defensive MVP, Newcomer of the year

Brian Qvale- Put on some muscle in the offseason and has a noticeably improved offensive game... looke much more comfortable with the ball in his hands.... will be a monster on defense...still needs to improve his footwork but is coming along nicely
pre season prediction: Should lead the BSC in Blocks would love to see him avg. double digit rebounds

Anthony Johnson - Plays very hard on both ends....extremely long and quick...could get a little shot happy but he could have some Monster games offensivley.... seems to relish playing defense.
pre season predicion: Top Newcomer of the Year canidate, will start on and off throughout the year

Ryan Staudacher- Lights out.....
pre season prediction: leads the BSC if not the nation in 3pt FG %

Derek Selvig- Still a year or two away....but will contribute....does some things that make u forget he's a seven footer (passing, ballhandling).... hung in there on D and used his length well...put in some noticeable work in the weight room. Should be a solid option off the bench this year.
pre season prediction: 5pts 5reb 1blk 3asst.

Others:
Vassy Banny- plays hard is a team guy and wants to play D and rebound....dont' expect much from him on the offensvie end.

Shawn Stockton- Had some issues with being pressured...but also is a very heady player made some great passes....needs to adjust to the speed of the game

Digs- Should redshirt..... has tons of potential...and a lot of work to do.... could be scary good in the future

Michael Taylor- Is a leader on the floor.....will play a ton of min. and won't do anything to hurt us...heady, and solid all the way around.

Ceylon Elgin-Taylor- Looked very good....we all know he can defend and has better shot mechanics...was agressive going to the rack....should be rock solid at the point for us this year

Kyle Sharp- Will be great off the bench again....always has the ability to have a big game.....has great experience...and is a Team First guy.....

Sounds like a much improved team !!

question for those at scrimage...do you see Johnson playing the 1 gaurd spot some for Jr.? or just the 2 ?
maybe some 3?

I am looking forward to these things..
Jordo- mvp
Jack -new comer of the year
Stauds-leading big sky in 3p %
Qvale-leading big sky in blocks and rebounding (going for blocks I hope he does not get into foul trouble)

Dreaming of the Dance in Oct.

To answer your question I see Johnson playing 1-3..... but primarily at the 2.... that seems to be his more natural position offensively.... defensively speaking...he can guard all three position and could be a terror as an on ball guy to put pressure on a PG bringing the ball up....when CET, McGillis and Johnson are on the floor at the same time I would hope we press and trap teams with weak guards.....it'd be a nightmare bringing the ball up the court with those three and even Banny pressuring and trapping.....

P.S. I can't believe how dead this thread is after our first scrimmage.... this team could really do some things this year and I hope people take note of it sooner than later.....

I got caught up in some work and had to miss the scrimmage but agree with what most people are saying. Did AJ's mid-range game look good? I was impressed after the one practice i went to.

AJ did most of him damage from mid range and knifing to the rack off the bounce....so i'd say your assesment from the first practice is pretty spot on and translated to the scrimmage (game enviroment).... its going to be hard to keep him out of the paint...and should turn into a nice drive and kick game....(great for Staud's!)

Yea, now we just need to have minutes for both.

I can't be there but read all the information. By the look at the number of hits, there is a lot of interest.
